Nifty jumps 1.60% to 22,722 as IT surges on HCLTech results and the FM signals openness on LTCG and STT

Nifty rose 1.60% to 22,721.95 and Sensex 1.54% to 73,033.78, closing near the day's high. IT surged 5.2% after HCLTech's results (HCLTech +8.4%, TCS +6.8%) and 14 of 15 sectors rose. The decisive move came after 2 PM, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government is open to hearing views on long-term capital gains tax and STT, while adding it was too close to the Budget to say what would be considered. Breadth was positive (1,356 to 959) but led by large caps; Fear & Greed improved from 13 to 21, still extreme fear, and the put-call ratio jumped from 0.73 to 1.27. Foreign investors sold a provisional ₹1,305 crore against ₹2,439 crore of domestic buying; Monday's foreign figure was revised to ₹3,252 crore. Korea's Kospi fell 7.4% on a chip sell-off, and the IMF raised its global growth forecast to 3.1%. WPI inflation is due on October 14.

Day in Brief

IT earnings in the morning, a tax-review signal in the afternoon

Nifty opened flat, rallied on HCLTech's results, stalled through midday, then surged after 2 PM when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government is open to hearing views on long-term capital gains tax and the securities transaction tax. It closed at 22,721.95, up 1.60% and near the day's high.

Key insights

  • Nifty rose 358.60 points (+1.60%) to 22,721.95 and Sensex gained 1,109.10 points (+1.54%) to 73,033.78, finishing nearly 350 points above a flat open at 22,364.

    • Per the Zerodha After Market Report, the index crossed 22,550 by 9:45 AM on IT strength, met resistance near 22,570 around 10 AM, and spent the middle of the day between 22,490 and 22,560.
    • The decisive move came after 2 PM: Nifty passed 22,600, then 22,650 by 2:40 PM, and crossed 22,700 in the final hour.
  • The afternoon rally followed the Finance Minister's comments on LTCG and STT — a signal of openness to debate, not a commitment to change anything.

    • "LTCG, a lot of people are commenting on it, both Indian and foreign investors. This debate on STT in the market and the question of treating all asset classes similarly, there is a lot of debate. It is healthy to have this debate."
    • She added: "We are very close to the Budget and the preparation for the Budget has started, and it may not be the best time for me to say what I will or what I will not consider."
  • IT surged 5.2% to 29,830 after HCLTech's results, leading 14 of 15 sectors higher; Pharma was the only sector that did not rise, ending flat.

    • HCL Technologies rose 8.4% to ₹1,326 on 8.0x its usual volume, TCS 6.8% to ₹2,269 and KPIT Technologies 6.8%; among non-F&O stocks Birlasoft jumped 8.8% on 9.8x volume.
    • Realty (+2.5%), Consumer Durables (+1.6%) and Financial Services (+1.5%) followed IT.
  • The largest companies led: Nifty 50 rose 1.6% against 0.8% for the Next 50, 1.0% for Midcap 150 and just 0.3% for Smallcap 250 — breadth was positive (1,356 advancers to 959 decliners) but narrower than the index move suggests.

    • Only 21.5% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average, though four stocks hit 52-week highs against three new lows.
    • The Fear & Greed Index improved sharply from 13 to 21 but remains in extreme fear.
  • Options traders leaned toward support: the put-call ratio jumped from 0.73 to 1.27 as put writing strengthened, and implied volatility fell from 14.6% to 12.6%.

    • Options imply a 22,516-23,102 range into the October 19 expiry, with the heaviest put open interest at 22,500 and call open interest at 23,000; the 20-day moving average at 22,882 is the first trend hurdle.
    • Foreign investors sold a provisional ₹1,305 crore, a 12th straight session of net selling but the smallest of the run, while domestic institutions bought ₹2,439 crore.

Source: Zerodha After Market Report, October 13, 2026. Media, IT and Pharma are the relative leaders over 20 and 60 sessions; Media is the only sector above all four key moving averages.

HCL Technologies

+8.4%
IT

Rose to ₹1,326 on 8.0x its usual volume after its September-quarter results, and set the tone for the whole sector.

Why it matters: With TCS (+6.8%) and KPIT (+6.8%) also among the top five F&O gainers, IT accounted for much of the index's gain.

Bandhan Bank

+9.2%
Banking

The day's top F&O gainer, closing at ₹172 on 4.1x usual volume. Bandhan Bank also leaves the F&O ban list on Wednesday.

Why it matters: The AMR's research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going, so one day's move is not a trend.

RBL Bank

-7.1%
Banking

The weakest F&O stock, down to ₹388.05 on 9.8x its usual volume.

Why it matters: Falls of 4% or more on at least twice usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week, per the AMR.

ICICI Prudential Life

-3.5%
Insurance

Fell to ₹447 on 2.0x usual volume even after reporting Q2 FY27 net profit up 25% year-on-year to ₹374 crore, with net premium earned up 16.5% to ₹13,804 crore.

Why it matters: Another result where headline growth was not enough for the market.

Tata Elxsi and Sun Pharma

Corporate news

Tata Elxsi reported Q2 net profit up 10% to ₹170 crore on revenue up 15% to ₹1,056 crore, with higher employee and operating costs keeping profit growth below revenue growth. Sun Pharma's board approved raising up to ₹10,000 crore through non-convertible debentures.

Why it matters: Company-specific developments rather than market-wide signals.

IndusInd Bank

Banking

Recorded a delivery spike: 76% of traded shares went to delivery against its usual 50%.

Why it matters: A higher delivery share means more buyers held their shares rather than trading out the same day — a first screen, not a verdict.

Why Markets Moved

Two catalysts, five hours apart. Nifty opened flat at 22,364, led by IT after a strong set of earnings from HCLTech, and climbed above 22,450 within 15 minutes and past 22,550 by 9:45 AM. The rally stalled around 10 AM near 22,570 and the index drifted toward 22,500 by 11 AM, then held a narrow 22,490-22,560 range through midday on subdued buying. Sentiment changed sharply after 2 PM, when the Finance Minister said the government is open to discussing and reviewing LTCG and STT: Nifty pushed above 22,600, then 22,650 by 2:40 PM, crossed 22,700 in the final hour and closed at 22,721.95, near its high and almost 350 points above the open.

Global indices, latest completed session — five of eight rose (Asia to Oct 13; Europe and US to Oct 12)

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:30 IST, October 13, 2026

  • Why a tax comment moves the market: LTCG and STT apply to every equity sale, so any hint that they might fall changes the after-tax return investors expect. The Finance Minister did not announce or promise anything; she said the debate is healthy and that it is too close to the Budget to say what will or will not be considered. Markets priced in the possibility, which can reverse if nothing follows.

  • Asia's chip sell-off did not reach India: South Korea's Kospi plunged 7.4% to its lowest since July, with Samsung Electronics down 7.7% and SK Hynix 8.8% on concerns about competition from Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT. Japan's Nikkei fell 2.0%. India's IT rally was driven by services earnings, not chips.

  • Valuations ticked up but remain low for large caps: Nifty 50 trades at 19.4x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 18.1x, both lower than on 99% of days since April 2021. Smallcap 250 is at 34.4x, higher than on 90% of days.

  • Commodities eased: By 19:30 IST MCX crude was down 1.2% (₹8,824), gold 0.5% (₹1,48,798), silver 1.1% and aluminium 2.0%; natural gas rose 1.9%. Crude fell below $92 a barrel after the US temporarily eased restrictions on Russian diesel exports for six months.

Global Brief

  • IMF lifts its global growth forecast: The IMF raised its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1% from 3%, with growth expected to accelerate to 3.4% in 2027, citing resilient advanced economies and AI investment; elevated energy prices remain a key risk.

  • OPEC+ output rises: OPEC+ crude production rose by about 900,000 barrels a day to 39.07 million in September, largely on higher Saudi output, despite continued disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Dollar eases from an 18-month high: The dollar index fell 0.3% to 102.26, retreating from 102.61, as oil eased and investors reassessed geopolitical risks ahead of the US midterm elections.

  • Kospi's worst day in months: Korea's benchmark fell 7.4% on a semiconductor sell-off, as concerns grew that Chinese chipmaker CXMT could intensify competition in memory chips.

India Brief

  • UPI merchant charges deferred: NPCI deferred the merchant discount rate on select UPI transactions, originally due on October 15, until after Diwali; a revised date will be announced later.

  • SEBI extends IPO-size flexibility: SEBI extended until March 31, 2027 its relaxation letting companies revise an IPO's fresh issue size by up to 50% without filing a new draft offer document, subject to conditions.

FII/DII Flows

  • Institutions net buyers again: Domestic buying of ₹2,439 crore exceeded foreign selling of ₹1,305 crore (provisional), making institutions net buyers overall for the first time in three sessions, per the AMR.

  • A revision to Monday's figure: Monday's foreign selling, reported in that edition as a provisional ₹1,708 crore, has been revised in NSDL data to ₹3,252 crore — slightly more than that day's ₹3,045 crore of domestic buying. A correction has been added to the October 12 edition. Today's ₹1,305 crore is also provisional and may change.

  • Twelve sessions and counting: Every session since September 25 shows net foreign selling. Today's provisional ₹1,305 crore is the smallest daily figure of the run.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

LTCG and STT: the two taxes the market reacted to

Long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax applies when you sell listed shares or equity mutual fund units held for more than 12 months. Under current rules, the first ₹1.25 lakh of such gains in a financial year is exempt and the rest is taxed at 12.5%. Short-term gains, on holdings of 12 months or less, are taxed at 20%.

The securities transaction tax (STT) is different: it is charged on the value of each equity trade itself, whether you make a profit or not, and it cannot be deducted from your capital gains. For long-term investors it is a small cost; for frequent traders it adds up.

Today's rally came from the Finance Minister saying the government is open to hearing views on both — not from any change. Tax rules are set in the Budget, and until then nothing about how your investments are taxed has changed. Decisions are best made on the rules that apply today.

  • LTCG: equity held over 12 months; first ₹1.25 lakh a year exempt, then 12.5%.
  • STT: charged on every equity trade, profit or loss, and not deductible from gains.
  • No tax has changed. Plan on current rules, not on a possible Budget announcement.
