Nifty rises 1.05% to 22,937 as the Fed holds rates and oil eases; 14 of 15 sectors gain
Nifty rose 1.05% to 22,936.75 and Sensex 1.24% to 74,151.04, climbing steadily from a flat open to a high near 22,960 late in the session. The AMR linked the rise to the US Federal Reserve holding rates at 3.75%–4.00% and a modest dip in crude, with Brent easing toward $114 from four-year highs; Kotak Neo also cited hopes of an LTCG tax cut. Fourteen of 15 sectors rose, led by Realty, FMCG and PSU Banks, and 1,398 stocks rose against 938. The Fear & Greed Index moved out of extreme fear to 28. Asian Paints' and Trent's profits rose, IndiGo's loss narrowed, and Equitas Small Finance Bank touched its 20% lower circuit after its CEO resigned, closing 12.2% lower. Domestic institutions bought ₹1,924 crore; foreign figures differ by source and may be revised, and NSDL's data revised Tuesday's and Wednesday's foreign flows.
Day in Brief
Nifty opened flat near 22,690, climbed through the morning, held its gains at midday and pushed to a high near 22,960 around 2:50 PM before settling at 22,936.75, up 1.05%. The AMR linked the rise to the US Federal Reserve's decision to keep rates unchanged and a modest dip in crude oil; Kotak Neo also pointed to hopes of a cut in long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax. Fourteen of 15 sectors rose, led by Realty (+2.8%), FMCG (+2.3%) and PSU Banks (+2.2%), and 1,398 stocks rose against 938 that fell. Equitas Small Finance Bank hit its 20% lower circuit after its MD and CEO resigned, before recovering to close 12.2% lower.

The US Federal Reserve kept its policy rate at 3.75%–4.00% after a 25-basis-point hike in September, with two policymakers favouring another increase.
- The AMR says the Fed pointed to resilient growth and employment but warned that inflation remains elevated.
- Brent crude eased toward $114 a barrel from four-year highs on renewed diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, though it is still up more than 17% this month.
A busy results day: Asian Paints' profit rose 7.5% and Trent's 9%, IndiGo's quarterly loss narrowed, and Suzlon's profit fell 69% from a high base.

- Domestic institutions bought a net ₹1,924 crore. For foreign investors the sources differ — NSE's provisional data show a ₹944 crore sale, the AMR's chart a ₹1,113 crore purchase — and the figure may be revised.

Source: Zerodha After Market Report, October 29, 2026. IT, Media and Pharma are the only sectors above all four key moving averages (20, 50, 100 and 200-day); seven are below every one.
Equitas Small Finance Bank
MD and CEO P N Vasudevan resigned, effective October 29, citing concerns over a perceived conflict of interest arising from his daughter's role as co-promoter of an RBI-licensed non-banking finance company. The shares touched ₹52.11, the 20% lower circuit, and closed at ₹57.17, down 12.22% on the NSE, per Kotak Neo.
Why it matters: Vasudevan said the relationship was within the rules and had been disclosed, but that the continuing perception had begun to affect the bank's stock. The AMR reported the fall as 20%, the intraday low.
Asian Paints, Trent
Asian Paints' consolidated net profit rose 7.5% to ₹1,068 crore on net sales up 16.9% to ₹9,954 crore, though operating margins narrowed to 15.6% from 17.7% on rising raw-material costs and supply disruptions. Trent's profit rose 9% to ₹490 crore and revenue 23% to ₹5,788 crore, with operating EBITDA up 37% and margins at 11.6%.
Why it matters: Trent was among the Nifty 50's five biggest losers on Thursday, per Kotak Neo; its results were due that day.
InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), Suzlon Energy
IndiGo's consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹1,879 crore from ₹2,582 crore a year earlier, as total income rose 24% to ₹24,312 crore; expenses of ₹26,188 crore included nearly ₹10,000 crore of aircraft fuel. Suzlon's profit fell 69% to ₹394 crore, which the AMR attributes largely to a high base, while revenue grew 26% on record wind-turbine deliveries.
Why it matters: Tijori's Aviation basket lost 1.2%, the worst of 80 niche themes, while its Power basket gained 2.8%, the best.
Adani Ports, JSW Energy, Syrma SGS Technology
Syrma SGS Technology rose 6.8% to ₹1,669, Adani Ports 6.3% to ₹1,872 (a fresh 52-week high) on 3 times its usual volume, JSW Energy 5.6% to ₹510 on 7.5 times, and City Union Bank and Adani Energy Solutions 5.5% each.
Why it matters: The AMR's research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.
Hero MotoCorp, Navin Fluorine, GMR Airports
Hero MotoCorp fell 4.1% to ₹5,105 on 2.1 times its usual volume as its futures open interest jumped 16.2% (new short positions). Navin Fluorine fell 2.8% to ₹8,260 a day before its results, GMR Airports 2.7%, Cummins India 2.3% and Crompton Greaves 2.0%.
Why it matters: The AMR notes that, since 2021, falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week.
Birlasoft, Poonawalla Fincorp, eClerx Services
Birlasoft jumped 11.9% to ₹342.50 on 24.8 times its usual volume, and an NSE bulk-deal disclosure shows Societe Generale buying ₹56 crore of its shares. Poonawalla Fincorp rose 9.5% to ₹441.50 and Reliance Power 9.1%; eClerx Services fell 11.0% to ₹1,661 on 7.2 times its usual volume and Tata Teleservices 8.3%.
Why it matters: MTAR Technologies saw a delivery spike: 58% of shares traded were taken to delivery, against its usual 22%, as the stock rose 2.6%.

Why Markets Moved
A flat open, a steady climb and a strong finish. Nifty opened flat at about 22,690 and, in the AMR's account, gained momentum as the US Federal Reserve's decision to pause and a modest decline in crude prices improved sentiment. It reached 22,750 by 9:45 AM, 22,800 around 10 AM and 22,875 by 10:30 AM, before selling at higher levels pulled it back to 22,815 around 11 AM. It then held between about 22,840 and 22,870 through the late morning, dipped toward 22,800 around 12:45 PM, and climbed again after 1 PM, reclaiming 22,900 around 2 PM and touching about 22,960 around 2:50 PM. It closed at 22,936.75 — about 250 points above its open and 237.90 above Wednesday. Kotak Neo also cited expectations of a possible cut in long-term capital gains tax — expectations, not an announced change.
Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:07 IST, October 29, 2026. European and US figures were still moving when captured.
Oil: The AMR says Brent crude fell toward $114 a barrel, retreating from four-year highs as renewed diplomatic efforts raised hopes of easing Middle East tensions. Around 3:39 PM, Kotak Neo quoted Brent January 2027 futures at $110.17 and US crude (WTI) December futures at $101.30. Brent is still up more than 17% this month. Oil & Gas rose 0.5%.
Broader market: Next 50 rose 1.2%, Midcap 150 0.9% and Smallcap 250 and Microcap 250 0.7% each. Over 20 sessions they are still down 1.9%, 2.8%, 3.6% and 6.9%, against a 1.0% gain for the Nifty 50; none of eight broad indices is above all four of its key moving averages.
Valuations: Nifty 50 trades at 19.2x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 17.4x, each lower than on 99% of days since April 2021 in the AMR's data. Midcap 150, at 26.8x, is lower than on 69% of days, while Smallcap 250, at 32.1x, is higher than on 76%.
Options positioning: Put writing picked up: the put-call ratio rose from 1.07 to 1.31, while implied volatility eased from 15.3% to 13%. For the November 3 expiry, options imply a range of about 22,694 to 23,251, with the largest put open interest at 22,000 and call open interest at 23,500. The 50-day moving average, at 23,277, remains the next major trend hurdle in the AMR's view.
Commodities: By 19:07 IST, MCX crude was down 2.6% at ₹9,545 (still up 11.4% over 20 sessions) and natural gas 3.7%; gold slipped 0.4% to ₹1,43,111 and silver 2.0% to ₹1,90,398.

Global Brief
Fed holds: The Federal Reserve kept rates at 3.75%–4.00% at its October meeting, following a 25-basis-point hike in September, with two policymakers favouring another increase. It highlighted resilient growth and employment but warned that inflation remains elevated and geopolitical uncertainty clouds the outlook.
Alphabet slides: Alphabet shares fell more than 10% in after-hours trading on Wednesday after its September-quarter profit missed estimates, per Kotak Neo; the AMR reports a drop of as much as 13.4%. Net profit fell 25% to $26.2 billion, revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion, and Search revenue growth slowed to 12% from 17% the previous quarter, while AI spending stayed heavy.
Oil majors beat estimates: Shell's third-quarter net profit of $10.81 billion beat estimates of $10.33 billion, and it raised its quarterly buyback to $5 billion. TotalEnergies' adjusted net income of $9.1 billion beat expectations of $8.3 billion, with $5 billion of buybacks planned over the next two quarters. Both benefited from higher energy prices and strong refining margins.
BYD's profit growth slows: BYD's net profit rose 28% to 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion), weaker than expected, on revenue up 13.6% to 221.5 billion yuan. Vehicle sales rose 18.8% to more than 1.32 million as overseas shipments more than doubled, while competition in China and abroad weighed on growth.
India Brief
SEBI to review FPI rules: SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said the regulator would review compliance rules for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and seek public feedback on aligning them with international practice, per Kotak Neo.
Power-sector data framework: The Power Ministry released the National Electricity Data Sharing Framework to standardise how data is classified and shared across the sector. Adoption is voluntary for generators, distribution and transmission companies and regulators, with safeguards for critical-infrastructure information.
Coal India's profit jumps: Coal India's consolidated profit rose 57% to ₹6,547 crore and revenue 21% to ₹44,179 crore in the September quarter, per Kotak Neo. Godrej Consumer Products' net profit grew 14% to ₹523 crore on revenue up 19%.
Welspun Corp expands abroad: Welspun Corp approved investments of up to ₹2,280 crore to expand steel-pipe capacity in the US and set up manufacturing and coating facilities in Jordan, alongside its quarterly results.
A fund manager's view: S. Naren, Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer of ICICI Prudential AMC, was quoted in the AMR as saying: "The exuberance is not in India; it is in the US." It is one fund manager's opinion, not a forecast.
FII/DII Flows
Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 29, 2026. NSE's provisional data show a foreign net sale of ₹943.60 crore on October 29, against the AMR's ₹1,113 crore purchase; the latest figure may be revised.
Revisions to Tuesday and Wednesday: The AMR's chart now shows NSDL's figures for October 27 and 28. Tuesday's foreign flow, first reported provisionally as a ₹4,240 crore purchase, is now a ₹1,341 crore sale; Wednesday's provisional ₹872 crore purchase is now ₹4,198 crore. We have corrected the October 27 and 28 editions. Domestic figures are unchanged.
Today (provisional): Domestic institutions bought a net ₹1,924 crore. For foreign investors, sources differ: NSE's provisional data show a net sale of ₹944 crore, while the AMR's chart shows a ₹1,113 crore purchase. Either figure may be revised. Using the AMR's chart, foreign investors bought a net ₹2,115 crore over the last ten sessions and domestic institutions ₹14,526 crore.
Derivatives: Foreign investors bought a net ₹7,373 crore of index options on notional value, ₹2,112 crore of stock futures and ₹81 crore of stock options, and sold ₹423 crore of index futures. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day
What is a circuit limit, and why did Equitas close above its lower circuit?
Stock exchanges cap how far many shares can move in a single day. These caps are called price bands or circuit limits, and for stocks outside the futures-and-options (F&O) segment they are commonly set at 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% of the previous close. When a stock hits its lower limit, it cannot trade below that price for the rest of the day, though it can still trade at or above it.
On Thursday, Equitas Small Finance Bank fell to ₹52.11 — its 20% lower circuit — after its MD and CEO resigned. Buyers then stepped in, and it closed at ₹57.17, down 12.2%. The AMR reported a 20% fall, which matches the intraday low; Kotak Neo reported the 12.2% loss at the close. Stocks in the F&O segment, such as most Nifty 50 companies, do not have fixed daily bands of this kind, and separate market-wide circuit breakers can pause all trading if the Nifty or Sensex moves 10%, 15% or 20%.
Circuit limits are meant to slow down panicky or frenzied trading and give investors time to absorb news. They don't change what a business is worth. A mutual fund holding a stock that hits a circuit simply values it at the closing price, and for a diversified fund one stock's day is usually a small part of the whole portfolio.
- A circuit limit caps a stock's daily move, commonly at 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% for non-F&O stocks.
- Hitting the limit intraday is not the same as closing there — Equitas touched −20% but closed −12.2%.
- Limits slow trading down; they don't change the value of the underlying business.
