Brent tops $100, the rupee breaks ₹95 and Nifty slides for an eighth straight session
Nifty closed at 23,431.50 (-0.86%) — an eighth straight down session — as Brent crossed $100 after US strikes destroyed five Iranian oil tankers and Iran retaliated near the Strait of Hormuz. The rupee weakened past ₹95. BlackRock-managed funds, Temasek, Premji Invest and Alpha Wave Global are investing ₹9,825 crore in Adani Airport Holdings at an ~$18-billion pre-money; Graphite India jumped 15% after GrafTech's 30% electrode-price hike; and the Cabinet cleared ₹20,804 crore of rail projects. US PPI and the ECB decision are today's global hinges.
The Day in Brief
Key insights
Nifty fell for an eighth straight session to 23,431.50 as Brent crossed $100.
- The index closed 203.60 points (-0.86%) lower after an escalation in the Middle East — US strikes destroyed five Iranian oil tankers and Iran retaliated against ships near the Strait of Hormuz and a US base in Jordan — pushed Brent above the psychological $100 mark.
- Breadth narrowed too: the Midcap 100 (-0.51%) and Smallcap 100 (-0.48%) fell after rising a day earlier, and Bank Nifty slipped 0.85%.
The rupee broke past ₹95 per dollar.
- USD/INR printed close to 95.12 (exchangerate-api.com, Sep 10 00:02 UTC); the rupee fell 21 paise to ₹94.95 in early trade (Business Standard) as oil — India is the world's third-largest importer — and a firm dollar bit at once.
Global money is still hunting Indian primary and infrastructure paper.
- BlackRock-managed funds, Temasek, Premji Invest and Alpha Wave Global are putting ₹9,825 crore into Adani Airport Holdings at a pre-money valuation of about $18 billion — days after BlackRock anchored Rentomojo's IPO.
Graphite electrodes just got at least 30% more expensive.
- US producer GrafTech announced an immediate minimum 30% hike in graphite electrode prices after cutting 51,000 tonnes of capacity; Graphite India rallied ~15% to near an eight-year high and HEG surged.
The US rates story builds ahead of this week's inflation prints.
- The 10-year Treasury hovered near 4.8%, the 30-year fixed mortgage hit 6.85% — highest since June 2025 — and US equity futures fell for a third straight session, ahead of producer prices today and consumer prices tomorrow.
Delhi is spending on rail even as markets grind lower.
- The Cabinet cleared eight railway multitracking projects worth ₹20,804 crore — about 1,196 km across 31 districts and nine states — targeted for completion by 2029-30.

Why Markets Moved
The shape of the day. Oil set the agenda from the open. Brent crossed $100 on the worst Middle East escalation of the week — US strikes that destroyed five Iranian oil tankers, and Iran's retaliation against shipping near the Strait of Hormuz and against a US base in Jordan. Nifty gapped down 113 points to open at 23,522, recovered to an intraday high near 23,570, then final-hour selling and a weak closing auction carried it to 23,431.50 — near the day's low and about 90 points below where it opened. It was the eighth straight down session.
Oil / geopolitics: Brent rose above $100 a barrel, a six-week high, after the strikes-and-retaliation loop widened. The Strait of Hormuz remains the corridor the whole trade is watching; supply-disruption tail risk stays at the centre of the tape.
Currency: The rupee broke past ₹95, its sharpest slide in this sell-off — 21 paise softer in early trade to ₹94.95 — deepening import-cost anxiety for the world's third-largest oil importer and adding to the pressure on rate-sensitive names.
Rates: The US 10-year held near 4.8% with the 30-year fixed mortgage at 6.85% — the highest since June 2025 — ahead of today's PPI and tomorrow's CPI. India bonds stayed in the RBI liquidity-drain world as traders weighed continuing VRRR operations.
Rotation beneath the tape: Breadth narrowed: the Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 fell for the first time in the streak (about -0.5% each) after rising the previous session, and Bank Nifty slipped 0.85%. The standout moves were single-stock — Graphite India +15% and a surge in HEG on GrafTech's 30% electrode-price hike — rather than any sector rotation.
Positioning: For the Sep 15 expiry the OI ladder drifted lower: maximum Call OI sits at 23,700 then 23,800 (resistance 23,600–23,700); maximum Put OI at 23,000 then 23,500 (support 23,300–23,200) — Sensibull data via Zerodha.

FII/DII Flows
| Investor | Buy (₹ cr) | Sell (₹ cr) | Net (₹ cr) |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII / FPI | 11,704.84 | 11,828.03 | -123.19 |
| DII | 14,678.53 | 13,328.89 | +1,349.64 |
Source: NSE India, provisional cash-segment data (Sep 8)
What the flows say: The published prints remain absorption-led: on Sep 8, DIIs bought a net ₹1,350 crore while FIIs were marginal net sellers (₹123 crore) even as the index fell for a seventh day. For Sep 9, the provisional FII/DII file had not been published at our cutoff, so those figures are left unshown rather than estimated.
Why it matters this week: Eight straight down sessions on a declining Nifty have come without aggressive foreign selling. If the pattern holds through an oil-above-$100 day, the sell-off is de-risking and valuation discipline — not an exodus; the DII bid remains the structural floor under the put-OI shelf.
Context: Foreign flows respond to the same two variables as the index — oil and US yields — with a lag. Today's US PPI and the ECB decision will tell us whether the rates leg of that equation tightens further before the September expiry.

Stocks in Focus
Graphite IndiaNSE: GRAPHITE
Rallied after US producer GrafTech announced an immediate minimum 30% hike in graphite electrode prices, on top of a 51,000-tonne capacity cut — raising expectations of tighter global supply and better realisations.
Why it matters: Electrode price hikes map almost one-for-one to margins for India's big electrode producers; the market is pricing a pass-through already.
HEGNSE: HEG
Rallied on the same GrafTech price-hike and capacity-cut news that lifted Graphite India.
Why it matters: HEG is the other full-cycle electrode maker; the move reflects the supply shock hitting the duopoly's pricing power at once.
Adani EnterprisesNSE: ADANIENT
Its airport arm, Adani Airport Holdings, will raise ₹9,825 crore of fresh equity from BlackRock-managed funds, Temasek, Premji Invest and Alpha Wave Global, which together acquire about 5.54% at a pre-money valuation of around $18 billion.
Why it matters: Primary capital is flowing into India's airport infrastructure even as the secondary tape weakens — a direct read on where the world's largest manager wants durable India exposure.
Steel Exchange IndiaNSE: STEX
Signed a four-year MoU with NMDC for long-term procurement of iron-ore fines (61–63%+ Fe) from NMDC's upcoming Visakhapatnam facility.
Why it matters: Locking in ore supply next to its Vizianagaram plant improves raw-material security and cuts logistics costs for a mid-sized steelmaker.
PVR INOXNSE: PVRINOX
The ₹300-crore share buyback opens for subscription today (Sep 10).
Why it matters: Returning cash at a beaten-down, consumer-facing stock is a useful signal on where promoters see value relative to the tape.
Global Capital: Key Moves
What the big firms are saying and doing. The world's largest asset manager has had one of its busiest India weeks in months — anchoring an IPO and leading an airport-infrastructure raise — even as the listed tape weakens.
BlackRock — one week, two India bets: After participating in Rentomojo's ₹376-crore IPO anchor round, BlackRock-managed funds are leading the ₹9,825-crore raise into Adani Airport Holdings. The rotation is explicit: primary and infrastructure paper in, marginal secondary exposure out.
US rates — an inflation week: The 10-year Treasury hovered near 4.8% and the 30-year fixed mortgage rose to 6.85%, the highest since June 2025. US equity futures fell for a third straight session (S&P 500 and Dow around -0.5%, Nasdaq 100 down as much as 1%) ahead of today's PPI and tomorrow's CPI.
Metals supply — GrafTech's squeeze: A 51,000-tonne capacity cut plus a minimum 30% price hike in graphite electrodes is a sharp example of supply discipline migrating from US producers to Indian materials names like Graphite India and HEG.
Commodities — copper near records: Copper futures hovered near record highs around $6.75 per pound as traders booked profits after a sharp rally, with power-grid, AI data-centre and electrification demand underpinning the longer-run bid.
Private Equity & M&A
The big-ticket flow went to infrastructure. One deal dominated the Indian PE/M&A tape: a $1-billion-plus equity raise into Adani Airport Holdings.
Adani Airport Holdings — ₹9,825 crore at ~$18-billion pre-money: BlackRock-managed funds, Temasek, Premji Invest and Alpha Wave Global are acquiring about 5.54% for fresh equity, with proceeds earmarked for airport expansion, modernisation, airport-linked commercial infrastructure and adjacent businesses.
What it prices: The ~$18-billion pre-money sets a fresh benchmark for Indian airport assets and underlines how much of this week's global-manager appetite is aimed at long-dated infrastructure rather than liquid equities.
Mutual Funds
BlackRock's week: An anchor cheque in Rentomojo and now a lead role in the Adani airports raise — the world's largest manager is underwriting Indian primary and infrastructure paper even as listed-equity sentiment softens. For MF investors it is a reminder that global-manager allocation decisions and category-level fund flows can diverge sharply.
Duration under the US data week: Today's PPI and tomorrow's CPI will tell debt funds whether the US 10-year holding near 4.8% extends; duration stays the live risk on the debt side even as Indian yields remain range-bound.
Liquidity backdrop: The RBI's continuing VRRR operations keep draining surplus liquidity; India bond yields are caught between domestic easing hopes and external rate pressure.
NFO watch: No new major fund offers were flagged in this morning's sources beyond the JioBlackRock dynamic equity-debt allocation fund already noted.
When the largest asset manager on earth parks a chunk of its India exposure in airports — days after anchoring a home-furnishing IPO — it is a signal about where it sees durable growth, not about the direction of the tape. For mutual-fund investors it is context: global money in India is rotating toward primary and infrastructure paper while listed-equity sentiment stays fragile. Diversification across asset classes, rather than timing the index, is the durable lesson.
Macro Watch
Rupee & the import bill: The rupee broke ₹95 per dollar — 21 paise softer in early trade to ₹94.95 — as Brent crossed $100. For the world's third-largest oil importer, every leg of the loop (oil to rupee to imported input costs) feeds the inflation-watch and limits the RBI's easing room.
Rail capex: The Cabinet cleared eight railway multitracking projects worth ₹20,804 crore — about 1,196 km across 31 districts and nine states — with five projects (₹10,021 crore) in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, targeted for completion by 2029-30.
Monsoon (continuing): Rainfall remains about 14% below normal in India's most uneven monsoon in a decade (Crisil) — the food-price backdrop that keeps constraining how far the RBI can ease, and a live watch as September rainfall shapes the rabi outlook.
Global Brief
US: Treasuries held near 4.8% and the 30-year fixed mortgage rose to 6.85% — the highest since June 2025. Equity futures fell for a third straight session (S&P 500 and Dow down around 0.5%, Nasdaq 100 down as much as 1%) ahead of PPI today and CPI tomorrow.
Europe: The ECB's Governing Council rate decision and press conference are due today (Sep 10) — the euro area answering the same oil-and-yields question that is repricing US and Indian assets.
Middle East: Brent rose above $100 a barrel, a six-week high, after US strikes destroyed five Iranian oil tankers and Iran retaliated against ships near the Strait of Hormuz and a US base in Jordan.
Commodities & trade: Copper hovered near a record ~$6.75 per pound as profit-takers met a structurally tight market; Argentina's corn exports are set for a record ~10 million tonnes in August–September as buyers seek alternatives to disrupted Ukrainian supplies.
Management chatter
“The ARC industry has been an invisible but critical part of the credit cycle. This being the first ARC to list will give visibility to the whole industry. The industry has been around for 25 years, starting with Arcil itself.”
“Today, India has about 8% retail penetration, which is fairly low compared with the US and China. India is at the beginning of its digitization journey, particularly in tier 2 and 3 cities, where half of India's e-commerce today is already in tier 2-plus cities.”
Orvaa's take
Orvaa's Take
The clearest read this morning is the gap between the secondary tape and the primary one. Equities have now fallen eight sessions straight, the rupee has broken ₹95, Brent sits above $100, and the US 10-year near 4.8% is pulling rates higher everywhere — yet BlackRock's funds, Temasek, Premji Invest and Alpha Wave Global are putting ₹9,825 crore into a single airport business at an $18-billion pre-money, days after the same manager's funds helped anchor an Indian IPO. That is not contradiction; it is ranking. Global money keeps underwriting India's long-dated, compounding assets — infrastructure, primary issuance — and demanding discounts on liquid, marginal growth stories. For Indian investors the practical version of that is the OI ladder: support has drifted from 23,500–23,600 to 23,300–23,200, and resistance sits at 23,600–23,700. If today's US PPI and the ECB decision tighten the rates squeeze further, that shelf can be tested again; if oil rolls over, the eight-day sell-off has already priced much of it. Watch the data, not the noise.
