Nifty's fourth straight gain hits 23,414 as crude's slide cools inflation fears — but breadth turns narrower

Nifty closed at 23,414.30 (+67.90 / +0.29%) on Monday, its fourth consecutive gain and best close since September 10, as oil's fourth straight losing session (toward $97.30) eased inflation worries. But breadth turned mixed and narrower than Friday's broad advance — 1,049 advancers against 1,243 decliners — as Pharma (+1.16%) led and Metal (-0.61%) lagged. DIIs bought a strong ₹2,797.27 crore of cash equities while FIIs turned net sellers again (-₹576.20 crore) and remain 87.6% short in index futures. Sensex closed at 74,858.99 (+0.76%), India VIX eased to 11.25, and the rupee firmed slightly to 95.87/USD. Globally, Bitcoin jumped 5.6% to near $84,949 on regulatory tailwinds, SoftBank launched an $11-billion-equivalent bond sale to fund its OpenAI investment, and Volvo Cars named Klaus Zellmer its next CEO.

The Day in Brief

Key insights

  • Nifty extended its winning run to a fourth straight session, closing at 23,414.30 (+67.90 / +0.29%) — its best close since September 10 — as a fourth straight day of falling crude eased inflation worries and gave the market room to grind higher.

    • The session: a flat-to-weak open (23,330, down 15 points), a choppy first half between 23,290 and 23,340, then a push through 23,450 in the early afternoon to an intraday high of 23,466.80, before a late fade to 23,414.30.
    • The close was about 84 points above the open — a fourth consecutive gain that has added 1.28% since the September 15 low of 23,118.60.
  • Breadth turned mixed and noticeably narrower than Friday's: 1,049 advancers against 1,243 decliners, even as the index made a fresh multi-session high — a sign the rally is now leaning on fewer, larger names.

    • Pharma (+1.16%) led sectors and Metal (−0.61%) lagged, with 11 of 15 sectors gaining; only 33.3% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average, and new 52-week highs beat lows by a narrower 13 to 9.
    • Jaiprakash Power jumped 7.22% on 18x its normal volume, the day's standout high-volume move alongside Tega Industries and Patanjali Foods (Zerodha AMR).
  • DIIs did almost all of the buying: domestic institutions net bought ₹2,797.27 crore of cash equities while FIIs turned net sellers again, at −₹576.20 crore — reversing Friday's brief flip to FII buying.

    • In index futures, FIIs remain heavily short: just 12.4% of their positions are long, little changed from Friday's 12.6%.
    • Nifty options now price a roughly 124-point move either way into today's weekly expiry; the put-call ratio rose from 1.06 to 1.20 as put writing at 23,400 outpaced call writing at 23,500.
  • Oil fell for a fourth straight session toward $97.30 a barrel on hopes of US-Iran de-escalation and resilient Hormuz shipping traffic — the same relief that helped India's market grind to a multi-session high, while India VIX eased again to 11.25.

    • The US 10-year Treasury yield fell 5 bps to 4.95% on the same oil-driven inflation relief.
    • India's core sector output growth slowed to 4.8% YoY in August from a revised 5% in July — cement (+12.5%) and electricity (+11.6%) led, five of eight industries still expanding.

Why Markets Moved

The opening. Nifty opened flat-to-weak with a 15-point cut at 23,330, holding on to relatively higher levels as a cooldown in crude oil prices offered some relief after the recent bearish trend for the market.

The choppy first half. The index saw volatility soon after the open, initially recovering towards 23,400 before slipping back towards 23,360 around 10:30 AM. The weakness was gradually bought into, with Nifty recovering to 23,400 by 11:30 AM and then making a sharper move to 23,430 around noon, before consolidating in the 23,410–23,425 zone through the early part of the second half.

The afternoon push and close. After briefly slipping towards 23,400 after 1 PM, buying picked up sharply, pushing the index above 23,450 to an intraday high near 23,465–23,467 around 2 PM. Nifty held most of these gains for the next hour before losing momentum into the close, slipping back below 23,450 and then towards 23,430; a further decline in the closing minutes dragged it to 23,414.30 — still about 84 points above its opening level after a volatile but largely positive session.

2Where the session travelled — Sep 21 price ladder

Source: NSE India / Yahoo Finance daily OHLC for Sep 21, 2026

  • Breadth — mixed, and narrower than Friday: 1,049 advancers vs 1,243 decliners — a fresh index high built on fewer names than Friday's broad 1,775:839 advance. Only 33.3% of Nifty 500 stocks are back above their 50-day average, and new 52-week highs beat lows by a narrower 13 to 9 (Zerodha AMR).

  • Positioning — the expiry ladder: Nifty options now price a roughly 124-point move either way into today's weekly expiry, with the put-call ratio rising from 1.06 to 1.20 as put writing at 23,400 grew faster than call writing at 23,500. FIIs remain heavily short in index futures at a 12.4% long ratio (Zerodha AMR).

  • Flows — DIIs carry the tape again: DIIs net bought ₹2,797.27 crore of cash equities while FIIs turned net sellers at −₹576.20 crore, reversing Friday's brief flip to FII buying (NSE provisional data).

  • Delivery and volume — two tells: Jaiprakash Power jumped 7.22% on 18x its normal volume; Lalithaa Jewellery recorded the day's biggest delivery spike and Inox Wind the largest jump in implied volatility (Zerodha AMR).

Stocks in Focus

Jaiprakash Power Ventures

+7.22% on 18x normal volume (AMR)
Power

The day's standout high-volume move, alongside sharp volume spikes in Tega Industries and Patanjali Foods.

Why it matters: An 18x volume surge is the kind of conviction move that draws attention regardless of the sector backdrop — worth watching whether the interest persists.

Tega Industries

Sharp high-volume move (AMR)
Mining equipment

Traded on unusually heavy volume alongside Jaiprakash Power and Patanjali Foods in Monday's session.

Why it matters: Grouped by the AMR's volume screen as one of the day's most-traded names outside the index heavyweights.

Lalithaa Jewellery

Biggest delivery spike (AMR)
Jewellery / retail

Recorded the session's largest jump in delivery volumes, a signal of investors taking and holding positions rather than intraday trading.

Why it matters: A delivery spike this size often reflects accumulation rather than noise — worth tracking whether price follows.

Inox Wind

Largest jump in implied volatility (AMR)
Renewable energy

Options on the stock saw the day's biggest rise in implied volatility, pointing to traders positioning for a bigger move ahead.

Why it matters: A sharp IV jump often precedes news or a re-rating; the options market is pricing more uncertainty into the name.

Tata Steel

−0.61% — Metal sector (AMR/NSE)
Metals

CEO & MD T V Narendran spoke on India's opportunity amid climate and geopolitical shifts, even as the Metal index was Monday's weakest sector.

Why it matters: Management commentary on long-term positioning against a soft sector tape is a useful cross-check on near-term price action.

Deals & Ecosystem

  • India's core sector output growth slowed to 4.8% YoY in August from a revised 5% in July. Five of eight industries grew, led by cement (+12.5%) and electricity (+11.6%), followed by iron ore (+5.5%), steel (+3.4%) and refinery products (+2.6%).

  • Nearly 40% of India's coal-fired power plants are facing critically low fuel stocks as hotter-than-usual El Niño weather drives up electricity demand. The number of plants with less than 25% of required coal inventory, or under three days of generation capacity, rose to 74 as of September 19 from around 60 a week earlier.

  • Starbucks has signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to establish a Global Capability Centre in Chennai, expected to create around 800 high-value jobs in its first phase.

  • Indian Oil has approved an investment of up to ₹2,448.7 crore for a 424.65-km natural gas pipeline from Kochi to Thoothukudi via Kanyakumari, with total capacity of 6.84 MMSCMD including 1.71 MMSCMD of common-carrier capacity.

  • Dilip Buildcon has signed binding agreements with Alpha Alternatives to sell its stake in 10 SPVs developing solar projects in Madhya Pradesh, with an estimated project cost of ₹6,263 crore and an enterprise value of around ₹6,829 crore, subject to closing conditions.

Macro Watch

  • Currency: USD/INR eased to 95.87 on the reference cross (Tue, 22 Sep 2026, 00:02 UTC), down from 96.04 a day earlier — a marginally firmer rupee even as FIIs were net sellers of cash equities.

  • Rates & credit: The US 10-year Treasury yield fell 5 bps to 4.95% as another decline in oil prices eased inflation concerns and hopes grew that diplomacy could de-escalate the US-Iran standoff.

  • Oil: Crude fell for a fourth straight session toward $97.30 a barrel, as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the US-Iran conflict and resilient oil and LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz eased supply concerns. Markets are watching for possible talks between President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at this week's UN General Assembly.

  • Crypto: Bitcoin rose above $84,000 to around $84,949, up 5.6% over 24 hours, as positive US regulatory developments — an SEC exemption for tokenised-stock trading and new CFTC crypto proposals sent for White House review — improved sentiment. Ethereum gained about 6%.

  • The reversal: FIIs sold ₹576.20 crore of cash equities on Monday, reversing Friday's brief net-buy print (+₹599.54 crore). DIIs bought ₹2,797.27 crore — their biggest single-day buy in the editions tracked so far — comfortably offsetting the FII selling.

  • The caveat: FIIs remain heavily short in index futures (12.4% long ratio), little changed from Friday. One session of DII buying does not erase the standing pattern of a domestic bid against a foreign short book — Monday looked like more of the same, not a new phase.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

What is a "put-call ratio" (PCR), and why did it just jump from 1.06 to 1.20?

The put-call ratio compares the number of outstanding put options (bets that a price will fall, or insurance against a fall) to call options (bets that a price will rise) on the Nifty. It is usually measured by open interest — the contracts still outstanding, not yet closed.

A PCR of 1.20 means there is 20% more open interest in puts than in calls. When it rises because put writing (selling puts, a bet that the market will hold above a level) is growing faster than call writing, it often reflects traders getting more comfortable holding the index, not more fearful — the put seller is on the hook only if the market falls below their strike.

That is why Monday's move — PCR up from 1.06 to 1.20 as heavy put writing built up around the 23,400 strike — reads as a sign that options traders see 23,400 as a floor for this week's expiry, not as a warning sign.

PCR is a positioning gauge, not a forecast. It says where traders have placed their bets and what they think a level is worth defending — it does not guarantee the market will behave that way.

  • PCR = open interest in puts ÷ open interest in calls.
  • A rising PCR from put writing usually reflects confidence in a support level, not fear.
  • It describes today's positioning, not tomorrow's direction.

Educational explainer — not a trading signal or investment advice.

Global Brief

  • Oil slides for a fourth day on Iran diplomacy hopes: Crude fell toward $97.30 a barrel as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the US-Iran conflict and resilient Hormuz shipping traffic eased supply concerns, with markets watching for possible Trump-Pezeshkian talks at the UN General Assembly this week.

  • Bitcoin jumps on regulatory tailwinds: Bitcoin rose 5.6% to around $84,949 and Ethereum gained about 6%, as an SEC exemption for tokenised-stock trading and new CFTC crypto proposals sent for White House review improved sentiment.

  • SoftBank taps bond markets to fund its OpenAI bet: SoftBank has launched a sale of $10 billion in dollar-denominated bonds and €1 billion (about $1.15 billion) in euro-denominated bonds to help fund its investment in OpenAI. The dollar notes span 3.5 to 7.5 years; the euro bonds have 4- and 6-year maturities.

  • Volvo Cars names its next CEO: Volvo Cars has appointed Klaus Zellmer as its next president and CEO, succeeding Hakan Samuelsson no later than October 1, 2027, as the Geely-controlled automaker navigates US tariffs, weaker China sales, softer EV demand and high development costs.

  • Bonds bid on the same oil relief: The US 10-year Treasury yield fell 5 bps to 4.95% as easing oil prices reduced inflation concerns — the same relief that helped risk assets, including Indian equities, hold their footing on Monday.

“The world is changing and that change is creating an opportunity for India, but whether we are able to capture that opportunity will depend on how capable and competitive we become... There has probably never been a time when the world has been more interested in India as a market.”

Orvaa's take

Orvaa's Take

Four green closes in a row is a genuine winning streak, and it deserves to be called one — but look at who is doing the buying. Friday's breadth was broad (1,775 advancers against 839 decliners); Monday's was the opposite, with decliners outnumbering advancers 1,243 to 1,049 even as the index printed its best close since September 10. That combination — a rising index with falling breadth — is what a rally looks like when it is being carried by a narrower set of large names rather than the whole market moving together.

The flow picture tells a similar story. DIIs bought ₹2,797.27 crore of cash equities, comfortably the largest single-day domestic buy in the editions we have tracked, while FIIs turned net sellers again at −₹576.20 crore and remain 87.6% short in index futures. Falling oil is the genuine tailwind here — a fourth straight losing session for crude, hopes of US-Iran de-escalation, and a 5 bps drop in US 10-year yields all point the same way — but it is a macro relief rally, not yet a broad-based one.

What would change this read: breadth widening back out even as the index holds its gains, FIIs turning net buyers in both cash and futures together, or oil's slide stalling and reversing the inflation-relief narrative. Until one of those shows up, the discipline stays the same as Friday's: respect the domestic bid, and don't mistake a narrowing rally for a broadening one.

What to Watch Today

Markets

  • Nifty weekly options expiry today — max Call OI at 23,500, max Put OI at 23,400, with an expected move of roughly 124 points either way
  • Whether breadth widens back out from Monday's narrow 1,049:1,243, or the rally keeps leaning on fewer large names
  • Whether DIIs can keep absorbing FII selling at Monday's pace (₹2,797.27 crore) if the tape turns choppier into expiry

Macro

  • Crude's fourth straight losing session toward $97.30 — every dollar lower eases the inflation/rupee arithmetic for India
  • USD/INR against the 95.87 reference cross, after easing from 96.04 a day earlier
  • Any developments from a possible Trump-Pezeshkian meeting at the UN General Assembly this week, given the market's sensitivity to US-Iran headlines

Mutual funds

  • DII cash buying of ₹2,797.27 crore on Monday — whether SIP-driven domestic flows continue to be the load-bearing wall under the market
  • India's core sector slowdown (4.8% YoY in August) as one more data point for growth-focused fund positioning
  • Coal-stock stress at power plants (nearly 40% running low) as a watch item for energy and utility-focused portfolios
