Nifty bounces 0.34% to 23,140 as breadth turns two-sided, though insurers and NBFCs stay under pressure
Nifty rose 77.40 points (+0.34%) to 23,140.50 in a V-shaped session — opening lower at 23,035, touching a low of 23,020.95, then rallying to close near its high of 23,162.70. Sensex gained 0.43% to 73,895.74. Breadth flipped from Thursday's one-sided 73-to-426 rout to a near-even 249-to-247 on the Nifty 500, and the flow picture behind Thursday's crash is now confirmed: FIIs net sold ₹5,027.36 crore that day while DIIs net bought ₹4,301.18 crore. India VIX cooled 4.00% to 12.18, still above Wednesday's 10.35. The recovery was uneven — banks bounced, but Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank (insurers and NBFCs) stayed in the red as PB Fintech remained volatile a day after an AMR-estimated 36% crash, even after HDFC Mutual Fund bought about ₹320.6 crore of its shares. Brent crude eased on reported progress in US-Iran talks, and India's flash Composite PMI hit a seven-month high of 56.5.
The Day in Brief
Key insights
Nifty recovered 77.40 points (+0.34%) to 23,140.50, staging a V-shaped session: it opened slightly lower at 23,035, slid to a low of 23,020.95, then rallied through the day to close just 22 points off its high of 23,162.70.
- Sensex gained about 315 points (+0.43%) to 73,895.74 — both indices' first green close after Thursday's sharpest fall these editions have tracked.
- Breadth turned genuinely two-sided: 249 of the Nifty 500's constituents advanced against 247 decliners, a sharp reversal from Thursday's 73-to-426 rout.
Thursday's flow cliffhanger is resolved: FIIs net sold ₹5,027.36 crore of cash equities on the day of the crash, while DIIs net bought ₹4,301.18 crore — the classic dip-buying pattern this edition has repeatedly tracked.
- India VIX cooled 4.00% to 12.18, easing from Thursday's spike but still above Wednesday's 10.35 — the market isn't fully back to calm.
- A Zerodha After Market Report retrieved after Thursday's edition published shows the Fear & Greed Index actually fell from 43 to 27 that day — deeper into "Fear" than this edition could report at the time.
The recovery was broad but uneven: financials mostly bounced (Nifty Financial Services +0.56%, Private Bank +0.45%, Bank +0.26%) while insurers and NBFCs hit hardest by IRDAI's proposal stayed under pressure — Financial Services Ex-Bank was the only sector still in the red, down 0.07%.
- PB Fintech, which the AMR says crashed as much as 36% on Thursday (roughly ₹22,700 crore of market value erased), stayed volatile Friday — trading in a wide ₹1,115-1,262 range and still down mid-single digits intraday even after HDFC Mutual Fund bought about ₹320.6 crore of its shares in a bulk deal on Thursday.
- Nifty Realty (+0.92%) and Nifty Auto (+0.89%) led the gainers; 12 of the 17 sectors this edition tracks closed higher.
Two supportive threads ran alongside the bounce: Brent crude eased off Thursday's spike on reports of progress in US-Iran talks toward a phased Strait of Hormuz reopening, and India's flash Composite PMI hit 56.5 in September — its strongest in seven months.
- The PMI print, released Wednesday and not yet covered in these editions, showed manufacturing and services both accelerating, extending India's expansion streak past five years.
- Gold ($4,305.00/oz, +1.34%) and silver ($64.93/oz, +2.29%) both rose alongside a further, modest weakening in the rupee (USD/INR 96.02, +0.21%) — a reminder that today's calmer mood didn't fully reverse the week's risk-off undertone.

Why Markets Moved
The early test. Nifty opened at 23,035 — slightly below Thursday's close of 23,063.10 — and briefly extended the prior session's slide to a low of 23,020.95, testing the psychologically important 23,000 level that several desks had flagged as near-term support.
The recovery. From there, buying steadily took hold through the session. Value-buying interest returned to stocks that had become cheaper after the week's sharp correction, helped by Brent crude easing off Thursday's spike on reports of progress in US-Iran talks toward a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and by India's flash Composite PMI — released Wednesday at 56.5, its strongest reading in seven months — reinforcing a resilient domestic-growth backdrop.
The close. Nifty climbed to an intraday high of 23,162.70 and closed just 22 points below it at 23,140.50, up 0.34% — a session that closed near its best levels, in sharp contrast to Thursday's close near its worst. Breadth confirmed the shift: 249 advancers against 247 decliners on the Nifty 500, versus Thursday's 73-to-426 rout.
Breadth — a genuine two-sided session: 249 advancers vs 247 decliners on the Nifty 500 (NSE) — close to even, and a sharp reversal from Thursday's one-sided 73-to-426 breadth.
Sectors — a recovery led by what fell hardest, with one exception: Realty (+0.92%) and Auto (+0.89%) led; Financial Services (+0.56%), Private Bank (+0.45%) and Bank (+0.26%) partly recovered Thursday's IRDAI-driven losses. Financial Services Ex-Bank — the sector that includes insurers and several NBFCs — was the lone sector still red, down 0.07%, as PB Fintech remained volatile.
Flows — Thursday's crash, now with the flow data: FIIs net sold ₹5,027.36 crore in cash equities on Thursday — a sharp sell-off consistent with the day's fall — while DIIs net bought ₹4,301.18 crore, absorbing much of it. Friday's own flow print, which would show whether DIIs kept buying into the recovery, reports tomorrow.
Volatility — cooling, not yet calm: India VIX fell 4.00% to 12.18, but that's still well above Wednesday's 10.35 — consistent with a market that has stepped back from the ledge, not one that has fully relaxed.
The Week in Charts
VIX eased 4.00% Friday after Thursday's 22.76% spike, but at 12.18 it remains above the sub-11 range that held for most of last week.

Stocks in Focus
PB Fintech (Policybazaar)
The AMR estimates roughly ₹22,700 crore of PB Fintech's market value was erased on Thursday after IRDAI's proposed commission caps on insurance distributors, before HDFC Mutual Fund bought about ₹320.6 crore of shares in a Thursday bulk deal.
Why it matters: A large domestic AMC buying aggressively into a stock's sharpest-ever single-day fall is a real market signal of where at least one institutional investor sees value — though Friday's continued volatility shows the market hasn't settled on a verdict yet.
Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank (as a group)
While banks proper (Nifty Bank +0.26%, Private Bank +0.45%) recovered Thursday's IRDAI-driven losses, the insurers and NBFCs grouped in this index did not.
Why it matters: The split shows the market treating this as a genuine repricing of insurance-distribution economics for the companies most exposed to it, not a one-day panic that reverses uniformly.

Deals & Ecosystem
HDFC Mutual Fund bought approximately 25 lakh PB Fintech shares for about ₹320.6 crore via a bulk deal on the NSE on Thursday, Sep 24 — one of the few large domestic institutional purchases into the day's sharpest-hit stock.
India's flash Composite PMI, released Wednesday by S&P Global and HSBC, rose to 56.5 in September from a four-year low of 54.3 in August — the 62nd straight month above the 50 expansion mark, with manufacturing (55.7) and services (55.8) both accelerating.
SEBI's board met Thursday to review a proposed overhaul of Portfolio Management Services (PMS) regulations and new fund-diversion settlement norms; outcomes from that review had not been published as of this edition's build time.
Macro Watch
Oil: Brent crude eased back from Thursday's spike toward the $103-107 range on reports that US and Iranian negotiators are discussing a phased deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its naval blockade — though the same framework collapsed once before, in June, so the market is treating this as tentative, not resolved.
Growth: India's flash Composite PMI hit a seven-month high of 56.5, with both manufacturing and services accelerating and manufacturers adding jobs on stronger demand for electronics and pharmaceuticals — a domestic-growth data point that ran counter to the week's risk-off mood.
Currency: USD/INR edged up further to 96.02 (Fri, 25 Sep 2026, 00:02 UTC reference), from 95.81 a day earlier — a fourth straight session of a gently weakening rupee even as equities recovered.

Gold and silver both rose again today, alongside equities — the more typical pattern than Thursday's simultaneous fall in both. A weaker rupee (96.02, its fourth straight softer session) added a domestic tailwind for Indian gold prices on top of the dollar-priced gain.
Gold and silver prices sit alongside currency because they move on many of the same global forces as equities — the dollar, rate expectations, and risk appetite — and because gold/silver funds and ETFs are part of a diversified mutual fund portfolio. This is spot pricing for context, not a recommendation to buy or sell any commodity or fund.

Thursday's picture, now complete: On the day Nifty fell 1.64%, FIIs sold ₹5,027.36 crore of cash equities — their sharpest single-day net sell these editions have tracked — while DIIs bought ₹4,301.18 crore, their own largest buy since the ₹4,120.07 crore seen on Sep 22. DIIs absorbed roughly 86% of the FII sell-off, not all of it.
What to watch tomorrow: Friday's flow print (out tomorrow) will show whether DIIs kept buying into today's recovery, or whether Friday's bounce was driven more by short-covering and value-buying from other market participants than by the same institutional bid that cushioned Thursday's fall.

Concept of the Day
VIX cooled 4% today. Does a falling VIX mean the danger has passed?
Not necessarily — and this is one of the more common misreadings of the indicator. India VIX measures the options market's expectation of Nifty's movement over the next 30 days. When it spikes, as it did 22.76% on Thursday, it means the options market suddenly priced in bigger expected swings. When it falls, as it did 4.00% today to 12.18, it means that expectation has eased — but easing is not the same as returning to normal.
Volatility indices are famous for "mean reversion": after an unusual spike, they tend to drift back down over several sessions rather than snapping back to their pre-spike level in one day. Today's VIX (12.18) is still meaningfully above Wednesday's calm 10.35 — the options market is still pricing more uncertainty than it was two days ago, even though it's pricing less than it was yesterday.
The more useful question this edition tracks isn't "is VIX up or down today" but "where does today's level sit relative to the recent range." A VIX of 12.18 sitting above a 10-11 range that held for most of last week tells you the market's nerves haven't fully settled, even on a day the index itself closed higher.
This is also why single-day VIX moves, in either direction, are a poor basis for a trading decision on their own — they describe the market's current mood, not what happens next.
- A falling VIX after a spike usually reflects gradual mean reversion, not an all-clear signal.
- Compare VIX to its recent range, not just its prior-day level, to judge whether nerves have actually settled.
- VIX describes current uncertainty, not future direction — a lower VIX doesn't predict further gains any more than a higher one predicted Thursday's specific fall.

Global Brief
Oil eases on Iran-talks progress: Brent crude pulled back from Thursday's spike toward the $103-107 range after a report that US and Iranian negotiators in New York are discussing a phased deal: Tehran allowing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US ending its naval blockade. A similar framework collapsed after a June memorandum of understanding, so markets are treating this cautiously rather than as resolved.
PB Fintech's crash draws a domestic AMC's bid: HDFC Mutual Fund's roughly ₹320.6 crore bulk purchase of PB Fintech shares on the day of its sharpest fall is a notable example of domestic institutional capital stepping in during a stock-specific dislocation, distinct from the broader index-level DII buying seen the same day.
India's growth engine keeps humming: The flash Composite PMI's rise to a seven-month high of 56.5 — with manufacturing at 55.7 and services at 55.8 — extends India's run above the 50 expansion mark past five years, even as markets absorbed a domestic regulatory shock and global bond/oil volatility in the same week.

Orvaa's take
Orvaa's Take
Friday looked like relief, and in the numbers it was: Nifty closed near its highs instead of its lows, breadth flipped from one-sided to even, and DIIs' Thursday buying is now confirmed rather than assumed. But the recovery was selective in a way that matters more than the headline 0.34% gain. Banks bounced. Insurers and NBFCs — the specific target of IRDAI's proposal — mostly didn't. That's the market distinguishing between a broad panic (which tends to reverse indiscriminately) and a specific repricing (which doesn't), and it's a more useful signal than the index-level number.
VIX easing 4% while still sitting above last week's range tells a similar story: less fear than Thursday, not the all-clear. And the presence of a large, well-known domestic AMC buying aggressively into PB Fintech's crash — while the stock itself stayed volatile a day later — is exactly the kind of divided-opinion moment that a single day's price action can't resolve.
What would confirm today's bounce has legs: Friday's own FII/DII print (tomorrow) showing DIIs still buying rather than the rally being driven by short-covering; Financial Services Ex-Bank joining the rest of the financial sector in recovering; and VIX continuing to compress back toward last week's sub-11 range. None of that is confirmed yet — today earned a cautious "better," not a declaration that the week's volatility is over.
What to Watch Today
Markets
- Whether Nifty builds on today's close above 23,100, or Thursday's break reasserts itself — the next real test is whether 23,000 holds as support on any renewed selling
- Whether Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank joins the rest of the financial sector in recovering, or stays the market's one lingering trouble spot
- PB Fintech's continued volatility (₹1,115-1,262 range Friday) as a bellwether for how the insurance-distribution stocks settle
Macro
- Whether the reported US-Iran talks on a phased Strait of Hormuz reopening progress or collapse again, as a similar framework did in June
- India VIX's path back toward — or away from — last week's sub-11 range
- Any SEBI announcements following Thursday's board review of PMS regulations and fund-diversion settlement norms
Mutual funds
- Friday's FII/DII flow print (out tomorrow) — confirmation of whether DIIs kept buying into the recovery
- The Fear & Greed Index, which fell to 27 on Thursday (per a report retrieved after that edition published) — worth watching whether Friday's calmer session pulls it back up
- Whether the flash PMI's strength (56.5, a seven-month high) shows up in upcoming earnings commentary from consumption- and manufacturing-linked funds
Upcoming Calendar
