Nifty jumps 1.68% to 23,441 as Reliance surges 11.6% on record profit and oil eases
Nifty rose 1.68% to 23,440.80 and Sensex 1.66% to 75,692.78, a third straight gain, after a 169-point gap-up that the AMR links to Reliance Industries' record quarterly results and a fall in oil prices. Reliance jumped 11.6%, its biggest one-day gain since April 2020, and Oil & Gas led 11 rising sectors with a 6.0% gain. Unlike Friday, the rise was broad: 1,690 stocks rose against 653, and the Fear & Greed Index improved to 32. Brent eased to about $108.71 as the US and Iran gave diplomacy more time. SEBI recommended removing LTCG tax for foreign investors and easing tax on mutual-fund switches. Domestic institutions sold ₹392 crore; foreign investors were net buyers, by ₹4,319 crore on the AMR's chart or ₹3,115 crore in NSE's provisional data, which may be revised. Friday's foreign figure has been corrected to a ₹813 crore sale.
Day in Brief
Nifty opened 169 points higher at about 23,222, never traded below Friday's close, and jumped in the closing auction to finish at 23,440.80, up 1.68%; Sensex rose 1.66% to 75,692.78. The AMR links the gap-up to Reliance Industries' record quarterly results and a fall of more than 3% in oil prices, as renewed diplomacy between the US and Iran eased supply worries. Reliance rose 11.6%, its biggest one-day gain since April 2020 per Moneycontrol, and Oil & Gas led 11 rising sectors with a 6.0% gain. Unlike Friday, the rise was broad: 1,690 stocks rose against 653 that fell.
Key insights
Nifty rose 387.70 points (+1.68%) to 23,440.80 and Sensex 1,233.25 points (+1.66%) to 75,692.78, a third straight gain.
- Nifty opened at about 23,222, climbed towards 23,350 around 10:45 AM, slipped to a low of 23,207 in the early afternoon, then recovered to about 23,330 before a jump in the closing auction took it to the day's high at the close.
- It is 3.0% higher over five sessions and 4.5% over 20, and now closes above its 20- and 50-day averages but 1.1% below its 100-day average, which the AMR puts at 23,692.
The rise was broad: 1,690 stocks rose and 653 fell — about 2.6 gainers for every loser.
- Next 50 rose 1.9%, Midcap 150 1.2%, and Smallcap 250 and Microcap 250 1.4% each; the share of Nifty 500 stocks above their 50-day average rose from 19.2% to 24.1%, with 11 new 52-week highs against 7 lows.
- The AMR's Fear & Greed Index improved to 32 from 27, still in the fear zone; the AMR cites easing demand for safe havens and shares outperforming government bonds.
Oil & Gas jumped 6.0%, followed by Metal (+3.2%) and Consumer Durables (+2.7%); only Pharma, Private Bank, IT and Media fell.
- Reliance rose 11.6% to ₹1,300 on 6.1 times its usual volume, and Dixon Technologies 12.0%; among smaller stocks, ITI hit its 20% upper limit on 90 times its usual volume.
- Pharma, Media, Healthcare and IT remain the only sectors above all four key moving averages; Private Bank, Consumer Durables, Chemicals and FMCG are below every one.
Oil eased: Kotak Neo quoted Brent January 2027 futures at $108.71 a barrel around 3:37 PM, after the AMR reported a 4.5% fall as the US and Iran gave diplomacy more time.
- US crude (WTI) December futures were at $99.74 at the same time, per Kotak Neo; by 7:58 PM, MCX crude was down 7.0%.
- Overseas, the S&P 500 fell 2.1% and the Nasdaq 100 2.3% in Friday's US session, while Asian markets edged higher on Monday.
SEBI has recommended removing long-term capital gains tax for foreign portfolio investors and easing tax on mutual-fund switches, Reuters reports via the AMR; the government will decide.
- Domestic institutions sold a net ₹392 crore. For foreign investors the sources differ — the AMR's chart shows a ₹4,319 crore purchase, NSE's provisional data ₹3,115 crore — and the figure may be revised.
- NSDL's data now show foreign investors sold ₹813 crore on Friday, not the provisional ₹3,599 crore purchase we reported; we have corrected the October 30 edition.

Pharma, Media, Healthcare and IT are the only sectors above all four key moving averages (20, 50, 100 and 200-day); Private Bank, Consumer Durables, Chemicals and FMCG are below every one. Reliance Industries
Reliance reported record second-quarter (Q2 FY27) results: consolidated revenue rose 28% from a year earlier to ₹3.62 lakh crore, EBITDA (operating profit before depreciation) 24% to ₹62,409 crore and net profit 34% to ₹29,550 crore, per the AMR. The shares rose 11.6% to ₹1,300 on 6.1 times their usual volume — their biggest one-day gain since April 2020, per Moneycontrol.
Why it matters: The AMR attributes the results to strong performance across its oil-to-chemicals (O2C), digital and retail businesses. As one of the largest Nifty weights, its move lifted the index and the Oil & Gas sector (+6.0%).
Garden Reach Shipbuilders, Goa Shipyard
The Defence Ministry signed contracts worth ₹53,866.5 crore with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard to build eight Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy — five by GRSE and three by Goa Shipyard.
Why it matters: The AMR says it is the first competitively awarded project for indigenously designed Navy warships.
Dixon Technologies, NBCC, Inox Wind
Dixon Technologies rose 12.0% to ₹12,319 on 5.7 times its usual volume, NBCC 9.3% to ₹76.13 on 4.0 times, Inox Wind 8.3% to ₹59.78 on 4.5 times and Indian Energy Exchange 6.6% to ₹107.52. Dixon's futures saw short covering — traders closing bets against the stock.
Why it matters: The AMR gives no reason for these moves, and its research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.
Syrma SGS Technology, PB Fintech
Syrma SGS fell 7.0% to ₹1,512 on 2.6 times its usual volume and PB Fintech 6.9% to ₹931, where futures open interest rose 13.8% as the price fell (new bets on a fall). Lodha Developers and Karur Vysya Bank fell 3.3% each and Navin Fluorine 3.2%.
Why it matters: The AMR notes that, since 2021, falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week.
ITI, Engineers India, Welspun Living
ITI hit its 20% upper limit at ₹259.14 on 90 times its usual volume and Engineers India rose 15.0% to ₹289.65. Welspun Living gained 10.6% to ₹242.34, a fresh 52-week high, after its results: Kotak Neo reports net profit rose about 13 times to ₹169.66 crore and revenue 16.9%. Affle 3i rose 12.3% on 29.6 times its usual volume.
Why it matters: The AMR gives no reason for ITI's or Engineers India's moves. Separately, HDFC Mutual Fund bought ₹135 crore of Eaaa India shares, the day's largest disclosed deal; the disclosure names the buyer, not the reason.
Escorts Kubota, Zee Entertainment, Clean Science
Escorts Kubota fell 6.0% to ₹2,423 on 6.1 times its usual volume in the session after its results: consolidated net profit fell 21.4% to ₹250 crore though revenue grew 16.2% to ₹3,243 crore. Clean Science fell 7.4%, Zee Entertainment 7.3% and Gallantt Ispat 7.5%.
Why it matters: The AMR says higher commodity costs and an unfavourable product mix weighed on Escorts' tractor business, where operating margins fell to 7.8% from 12.8%. It gives no reason for the other moves.

Why Markets Moved
A gap-up, a midday dip and a strong close. Nifty opened with a 169-point gap-up at about 23,222, which the AMR attributes to Reliance's results and a more than 3% fall in oil prices. After some early volatility it climbed towards 23,300 within the first 30 minutes and towards 23,350 around 10:45 AM. Profit-booking then pulled it back towards 23,300; a recovery towards 23,340 around noon faded, and it slipped below 23,300 after 12:30 PM to a low of 23,207 in the early afternoon. Buying at lower levels lifted it back above 23,250 by 2 PM and towards 23,325 by 2:45 PM, and after some consolidation a strong closing auction took it to 23,440.80 — about 219 points above its open and 387.70 above Friday. It never traded below Friday's close. Moneycontrol reports Reliance was the biggest contributor to the index's rise.
Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:00 IST, November 2, 2026. European figures were still moving when captured; US figures are Friday's session.
Oil: The AMR says Brent crude fell 4.5% towards $108 a barrel as renewed diplomacy between the US and Iran eased worries about further supply disruptions. Around 3:37 PM, Kotak Neo quoted Brent January 2027 futures at $108.71 and US crude (WTI) December futures at $99.74. Oil & Gas rose 6.0%, and Tijori's Oil Refiners basket 4.2%.
Broader market: Next 50 rose 1.9%, Midcap 150 1.2%, and Smallcap 250 and Microcap 250 1.4% each. Over 20 sessions the Nifty 50 is up 4.5% and Next 50 flat, while Midcap 150, Smallcap 250 and Microcap 250 are down 1.5%, 3.4% and 6.4%; none of eight broad indices is above all four of its key moving averages.
Valuations: Nifty 50 trades at 19.4x trailing earnings, lower than on 98% of days since April 2021 in the AMR's data, and Next 50 at 16.8x, lower than on every day. Midcap 150, at 26.6x, is lower than on 71% of days, while Smallcap 250, at 31.4x, is higher than on 70%.
Options positioning: Implied volatility for the November 9 expiry rose from 13.8% to 14.5%, making protection slightly costlier. For the November 3 expiry, options imply a range of about 23,177 to 23,482, with the largest put open interest at 23,000 and call open interest at 24,000. Short covering dominated stock futures: eight of the twelve biggest changes in open interest were traders closing bets against stocks that rose. The 100-day moving average, at 23,692, is the next major trend hurdle in the AMR's view.
Commodities: By 19:58 IST, MCX crude was down 7.0% at ₹9,246 (still up 7.9% over 20 sessions) and natural gas up 1.6%; gold rose 1.0% to ₹1,39,899 and silver 2.6% to ₹1,83,764, leaving silver down 18.7% over 20 sessions.

Global Brief
US–Iran diplomacy: President Donald Trump reportedly favoured giving negotiations more time before considering military action, and Iranian officials signalled that a deal remained possible after talks mediated by Qatar, per the AMR. That eased concerns about further supply disruptions and pulled Brent crude lower.
US tech after a hard October: US stock futures advanced on Monday as technology and AI-related shares showed signs of stabilising after October, when the Nasdaq-100 lost more than $2.5 trillion in market value, per the AMR. Investors remain cautious about Big Tech's AI spending and growing reliance on debt, with the US midterm elections and earnings ahead. In Friday's session, the S&P 500 fell 2.1% and the Nasdaq 100 2.3%.
Japan's factories: Japan's manufacturing PMI eased to 53.3 in October from 54.1, the slowest expansion in seven months, though factory activity grew for a tenth straight month, helped by semiconductor and AI-related demand.
BYD's overseas push: Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD's October sales rose 11% from a year earlier to about 4.9 lakh units, a sixth straight month of growth. Overseas shipments rose 102.8% to about 1.7 lakh units, offsetting sluggish demand and price competition at home.
India Brief
SEBI on capital-gains tax: SEBI has recommended removing long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax for foreign portfolio investors and giving tax relief to domestic mutual-fund investors who switch between schemes, Reuters reports via the AMR. The proposals respond to persistent foreign outflows and India's underperformance against other emerging markets; the government will make the final decision.
Factory activity: India's manufacturing PMI eased to 54.7 in October from 55.1 in September, still well in expansion. Output and new orders grew more slowly, but export orders grew at a six-month high and selling-price inflation eased to nearly a four-year low.
Ambuja Cements expansion: Adani Group-owned Ambuja Cements plans to invest about ₹14,500 crore to add 30 million tonnes a year of capacity, taking the total to 155 million tonnes by FY30, with new plants and upgrades in eastern, western and northern India.
Spandana Sphoorty: The microfinance lender reported unauthorised transactions of about ₹7.8 crore from one of its bank accounts on November 1. It suspended the affected services, asked banks to freeze the beneficiary accounts and reverse the transactions, and filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Government capital spending: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, quoted in the AMR, said government capital expenditure remains "a very important component of our growth strategy" until the private sector expands capacity, adding: "We shall continue doing that because India's growth momentum should not be lost at all."
FII/DII Flows
Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, November 2, 2026. NSE's provisional data show a foreign net purchase of ₹3,114.68 crore on November 2 (Kotak Neo), against the AMR's ₹4,319 crore; the latest figure may be revised.
Today (provisional): Domestic institutions sold a net ₹392.20 crore, their second net sale in a row. For foreign investors the sources differ but agree on direction: the AMR's chart shows a net purchase of ₹4,319 crore and NSE's provisional data ₹3,115 crore. Either figure may be revised.
Friday revised: The AMR's chart now shows NSDL's figure for October 30 as a ₹813 crore sale; our October 30 edition reported NSE's provisional ₹3,599 crore purchase, and we have corrected it. No other earlier figures changed. Using the AMR's chart, foreign investors bought a net ₹10,873 crore over the last ten sessions and domestic institutions ₹13,658 crore.
Derivatives: Foreign investors bought a net ₹10,513 crore of index options on notional value, ₹3,771 crore of stock futures, ₹1,113 crore of index futures and ₹399 crore of stock options. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day
Concept of the day: Why switching between mutual fund schemes can create a tax bill
A switch moves money from one mutual fund scheme to another — say, from a mid-cap fund to a large-cap fund, even within the same fund house. It feels like a single step, but for tax purposes it is treated as two: a sale (redemption) of units in the first scheme, followed by a fresh purchase in the second.
Because the first leg is a sale, any gain on the units sold is a capital gain and can be taxed in the year of the switch, as short-term or long-term depending on how long the units were held. The money moved is not taxed — only the gain. The purchase in the new scheme also starts a fresh holding period. That is why a switch made for sound reasons, such as rebalancing, can still carry a tax cost, and why some investors postpone it.
On Monday, the AMR reported that SEBI has recommended tax relief for domestic investors who switch between schemes. It is only a recommendation: the government decides tax law, and until it acts, switches continue to be taxed as today. Orvaa Learn's chapter "Mutual fund tax in practice", in the Taxes for Investors module, works through switches and SIP redemptions with examples.
- A switch is a sale plus a fresh purchase, so the gain on the units sold can be taxed.
- Only the gain is taxed, not the amount moved; the new units start a new holding period.
- SEBI's proposal is a recommendation; the current rules apply until the government changes them.
