Source: Zerodha After Market Report, October 30, 2026. IT, Media, Pharma and Healthcare are the only sectors above all four key moving averages (20, 50, 100 and 200-day); eight are below every one. IT, Media and PSU Banks have beaten the Nifty 500 over both the last 20 and 60 sessions.

Indian Oil Corporation, GAIL

Oil & Gas -0.5%
Oil & gas

Indian Oil's standalone net profit nearly tripled from a year earlier to ₹21,630 crore and revenue grew 30% to ₹2.63 lakh crore, helped by ₹7,243 crore of government compensation for losses on domestic LPG sales during April–September. GAIL's net profit more than doubled to ₹4,650 crore from ₹2,217 crore, and revenue rose over 30% to ₹45,924 crore, with gas-marketing revenue up 31% to ₹41,226 crore.

Why it matters: The AMR says the LPG compensation helped Indian Oil offset the impact of higher crude prices; GAIL's growth came from its natural-gas marketing business.

Sun Pharmaceutical

Pharma +1.6%
Pharma

Consolidated net profit fell 36.2% from a year earlier to ₹1,989 crore, missing estimates because of a one-time loss of ₹1,269 crore. Revenue grew 11.9% to ₹16,199 crore, beating expectations, and profit before exceptional items and tax rose 6.3% to ₹4,428 crore.

Why it matters: A one-time loss can pull reported profit down without changing the underlying business's earnings in the same way, which is why the AMR also gives the figure before exceptional items.

Sagility, Swiggy

Sagility -5.8%
Block deals

Sagility B.V. sold ₹2,395 crore of Sagility shares, the day's largest disclosed deal; buyers included BNP Paribas Financial Markets (₹240 crore), Societe Generale (₹203 crore), Ghisallo Master Fund (₹191 crore) and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund (₹150 crore). The stock fell 5.8% to ₹42.08 on 43 times its usual volume. In Swiggy, Tencent Cloud Europe sold ₹982 crore, while Societe Generale bought ₹429 crore and Morgan Stanley Asia ₹238 crore.

Why it matters: NSE's bulk- and block-deal disclosures name the client, not the reason for the trade.

Laurus Labs, Trent, Navin Fluorine

+7.2% / +5.4% / +5.1%
F&O gainers

Laurus Labs rose 7.2% to ₹2,406, a fresh 52-week high, on 4.6 times its usual volume. Ather Energy gained 5.6%, Trent 5.4% to ₹3,017 on 4.3 times its usual volume in the session after its results, Zydus Lifesciences 5.2% and Navin Fluorine 5.1% to ₹8,680 on the day its results were scheduled.

Why it matters: The AMR's research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.

Suzlon Energy, Inox Wind, Computer Age Management Services

-7.9% / -6.7% / -6.2%
F&O losers

Suzlon Energy fell 7.9% to ₹33.90 on 4.7 times its usual volume in the session after its results, Inox Wind 6.7%, CAMS 6.2% to ₹653.60 on 6.3 times, Amber Enterprises 5.9% and Sagility 5.8%.

Why it matters: The AMR notes that, since 2021, falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week.

Vedanta Power, Vedanta Oil and Gas, Intellect Design Arena

+14.7% / +8.5% / -16.3%
Non-F&O movers

Vedanta Power jumped 14.7% to ₹33.13 on 13.2 times its usual volume and Vedanta Oil and Gas 8.5% to ₹30.23 on 11.9 times; Poonawalla Fincorp added 4.6% after Thursday's 9.5% rise. Intellect Design Arena plunged 16.3% to ₹504.55 on 8 times its usual volume, Redington fell 8.5% and Paradeep Phosphates 7.7% on 15.6 times.

Why it matters: The AMR gives no reason for these moves. Separately, Cupid saw a delivery spike: 45% of shares traded were taken to delivery, against its usual 29%, as the stock rose 1.4%.

Why Markets Moved

A morning dip, a midday rally and a late fade. Nifty opened with a modest 28-point gap-up at about 22,965 despite what the AMR calls weak global cues — concerns over the sustainability of AI-related capital spending and elevated oil prices. After an early swing toward 22,990, selling dragged it to its low near 22,905 around 10:30 AM. Buying at lower levels then lifted it past 23,000 by 11 AM and toward 23,100 around noon, and it touched about 23,118 around 1 PM. In the afternoon, profit-booking pulled it below 23,050 by 1:30 PM and toward 23,000 around 2 PM; a rebound to about 23,075 faded, and it slipped toward 23,000 again in the final hour before closing at 23,053.10 — about 90 points above its open and 116.35 above Thursday. Kotak Neo says the benchmarks held their ground despite a decline in global technology shares, while broader markets came under pressure.

Global indices — Asian closes; Europe and US at 19:30 IST, October 30 — two of eight rose

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:30 IST, October 30, 2026. European and US figures were still moving when captured.

  • Oil: The AMR says Brent crude climbed above $113 a barrel, approaching its four-year high of $116.72, as renewed threats of US military action against Iran and two tanker incidents near the Strait of Hormuz raised supply concerns. Around 3:35 PM, Kotak Neo quoted Brent January 2027 futures at $113.09 and US crude (WTI) December futures at $103.99. Oil & Gas fell 0.5%.

  • Broader market: Next 50 fell 0.6%, Midcap 150 0.9%, Smallcap 250 2.0% and Microcap 250 2.5%. Over 20 sessions they are down 2.9%, 3.8%, 5.8% and 8.9%, against a 1.9% gain for the Nifty 50; none of eight broad indices is above all four of its key moving averages.

  • Valuations: Nifty 50 trades at 19.3x trailing earnings, lower than on 98% of days since April 2021 in the AMR's data, and Next 50 at 17.1x, lower than on every day. Midcap 150, at 26.3x, is lower than on 74% of days, while Smallcap 250, at 31.3x, is higher than on 70%.

  • Options positioning: Put writing strengthened: the put-call ratio rose from 1.31 to 1.42, while implied volatility eased from 13% to 12%. For the November 3 expiry, options imply a range of about 22,795 to 23,258, with the largest put open interest at 22,000 and call open interest at 23,500. The 50-day moving average, at 23,255, remains the next major trend hurdle in the AMR's view.

  • Commodities: By 19:30 IST, MCX crude was up 2.1% at ₹9,915 (up 13.4% over 20 sessions) and natural gas down 2.6%; gold fell 2.3% to ₹1,39,320 and silver 4.8% to ₹1,80,330, leaving silver down 20.2% over 20 sessions.

Global Brief

  • Record crypto theft: Hackers stole about $6.3 billion from the crypto exchange Binance, Reuters and the AMR report, with blockchain analysts TRM Labs and Chainalysis attributing the attack to North Korea; Binance and law enforcement had not confirmed the attribution. Binance halted withdrawals and pledged to cover customer losses. Tether said it had frozen about $1.57 billion and Circle more than $800 million, and Binance says about $3 billion has been frozen so far.

  • Intel slides after results: Intel shares fell more than 20% in after-hours trading on Thursday after its fourth-quarter revenue outlook of $15–16 billion came in below expectations, per Quartz; the AMR puts the fall at 23% and cites cash burn, weak PC demand and manufacturing bottlenecks. Reports of the size of the fall differ.

  • Amazon's spending worries: Amazon shares fell as much as 7% in extended trading, per the AMR, after the company reported substantial third-quarter cash burn and signalled higher AI-related capital spending next year. Growth at Amazon Web Services accelerated, and its fourth-quarter revenue forecast of $240–247 billion had a midpoint slightly below estimates.

  • Foxconn and OpenAI: Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker, said it is exploring a collaboration with OpenAI. Chairman Young Liu confirmed meeting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and said an announcement would follow once an agreement is finalised; no details have been disclosed.

  • Forex reserves: India's foreign exchange reserves fell by $1.2 billion to $719.74 billion in the week ended October 24, after a $5 billion fall the previous week. • Today (provisional): Foreign investors bought a net ₹3,599 crore of Indian shares, per NSE's provisional data — a figure that may be revised when NSDL reports. Domestic institutions sold a net ₹818 crore, their third net sale in the last ten sessions.

  • Thursday settled: The AMR's chart now shows NSDL's figure for October 29 as a ₹1,113 crore purchase, the number our October 29 edition charted; NSE's provisional data had shown a ₹944 crore sale. No earlier figures changed. Over the last ten sessions, foreign investors bought a net ₹6,808 crore and domestic institutions ₹10,389 crore.

  • Derivatives: Foreign investors bought a net ₹5,504 crore of index options on notional value, and sold ₹448 crore of index futures, ₹288 crore of stock futures and ₹94 crore of stock options. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

What is the fiscal deficit, and why do bond investors watch it?

The fiscal deficit is the gap between what the central government spends in a year and what it earns from taxes and other non-borrowed income. The government fills that gap mainly by borrowing — largely by selling government bonds (G-Secs). For FY27, the target is ₹16.96 lakh crore, per the AMR.

Progress is reported month by month as a share of that full-year target. Per the AMR, the deficit reached ₹7.14 lakh crore in April–September, or 42.1% of the target, compared with 36.5% at the same point last year. A faster pace early in the year doesn't by itself mean the target will be missed — tax collections and spending are uneven across months — but it is one of the numbers markets track to judge whether the government may need to borrow more.

That matters to investors because government borrowing is the biggest source of supply in India's bond market. If markets expect more borrowing, bond yields can rise, which lowers the prices of existing bonds — and the value of debt mutual funds that hold them, especially longer-duration funds. Equity valuations can feel it too, since higher yields raise the return investors demand from shares.

  • Fiscal deficit = government spending minus non-borrowed income; it is financed mostly by selling government bonds.
  • The monthly figure is shown as a share of the full-year target; a fast start is a signal to watch, not a verdict.
  • Expectations of heavier borrowing can push bond yields up, which affects debt-fund values most.
