Day in Brief

A 417-point gap-up, a close above the 200-day average and a sixth straight gain

Nifty opened 417 points higher at about 24,378, which the AMR links to buoyant global markets and a sharp fall in oil prices after the US midterm elections, never traded below Wednesday's close, and finished at 24,536.60, up 2.40% — its best session in six months, per the AMR. Sensex rose 2.60% to 79,310.01. This time the largest companies led: the Nifty 50 rose 2.4% against the Smallcap 250's 0.8%, with Auto (+4.1%) and Financial Services (+4.0%) the strongest sectors. Nifty closed about 2.2% above its 200-day average, which it had ended just below on Wednesday.

Key insights

  • Nifty rose 576.00 points (+2.40%) to 24,536.60 and Sensex 2,008.61 points (+2.60%) to 79,310.01 — the Nifty's sixth straight gain and, per the AMR, its best session in six months.

    • Nifty opened with a 417-point gap-up at about 24,378, dipped to a low of 24,296 in the opening minutes, spent the morning between about 24,350 and 24,420, then climbed after 1 PM to a high of 24,580 around 1:45 PM before closing nearly 160 points above its open.
    • It is up 7.0% over five sessions and 8.6% over 20. It closed 2.2% above its 200-day average, which the AMR puts at 23,999 and now calls an important technical level to watch.
  • Oil kept falling: Kotak Neo quoted Brent January 2027 futures at $96.15 a barrel around 3:36 PM, down from $102.55 at about the same time on Wednesday.

    • US crude (WTI) December futures were at $88.63, per Kotak Neo. The AMR says Brent had plunged nearly 9% in the previous session to a two-month low after a Democratic sweep in the US midterms raised expectations of pressure on President Trump to end the conflict with Iran.
    • The AMR credits easing oil prices and positive global cues for the day's mood. By 6:51 PM MCX crude was up 1.6% on the day but still down 12.5% over five sessions.
  • Large companies led: Auto rose 4.1%, Financial Services 4.0% and Realty 3.5%, and 13 of 15 sectors gained; Chemicals (−0.6%) and Media (−0.8%) fell.

    • Midcap 150 rose 1.9%, but Smallcap 250 gained only 0.8% and Microcap 250 1.1%. Breadth stayed positive but narrower than Wednesday: 1,611 stocks rose and 751 fell, about 2.1 for every one.
    • The share of Nifty 500 stocks above their 50-day average rose 9.5 points to 46.9%, with 17 new 52-week highs against 4 lows, and cash-market turnover was 46% above its recent median.
  • Two results-day falls stood out: PI Industries dropped 19.1% to ₹1,770 on 31 times its usual volume, and Cummins India 14.1% to ₹4,059.

    • PI Industries fell after its September-quarter profit dropped about 70% to ₹122 crore and revenue 9% to ₹1,702 crore, per Kotak Neo, which says the company cited higher input costs and pricing pressure.
    • Cummins India's consolidated profit fell 18.5% to ₹507 crore even as revenue grew 4.1%, with its operating margin down to 15.3% from 21.9%, per the AMR.
  • Foreign investors bought a net ₹14,975 crore in NSE's provisional data, which may be revised; domestic institutions sold ₹10,445 crore, their fifth net sale in a row.

    • ScanX shows the same provisional figures. It is foreign investors' fourth straight day of net buying in our chart, and both figures are the largest of the ten sessions charted.
    • In derivatives, foreign investors bought 48,541 index-futures contracts worth ₹7,884 crore, lifting the share of their index-futures positions held long to 21.5% — higher than on 95% of days over the past year, per the AMR.

IT, Media and Realty have beaten the Nifty 500 over both the last 20 and 60 sessions.

PI Industries

−19.1%
Agrochemicals

PI Industries fell 19.1% to ₹1,770 on 31.4 times its usual volume, the biggest F&O loser, after September-quarter profit fell about 70% to ₹122 crore and revenue 9% to ₹1,702 crore, per Kotak Neo. Its futures open interest jumped 40% — short buildup, meaning new bets on a fall.

Why it matters: Kotak Neo and Business Standard link the fall to the results; Kotak Neo says the company cited higher input costs, pricing pressure, El Niño conditions and genericisation. Chemicals was one of only two sectors to fall.

Cummins India

−14.1%
Engines

Cummins India fell 14.1% to ₹4,059 on 12.7 times its usual volume. Its consolidated net profit fell 18.5% from a year earlier to ₹507 crore, though revenue rose 4.1% to ₹3,301 crore; EBITDA fell 27.1% to ₹506 crore and the operating margin narrowed to 15.3% from 21.9%.

Why it matters: The fall came in the session after its results. The AMR's research notes falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the next week; it is not a forecast.

Mahindra & Mahindra, UNO Minda, Ashok Leyland

Profit +25% / +11.5% / +10.5%
Auto

M&M's consolidated net profit rose 25% to ₹4,588 crore and revenue 25% to ₹57,553 crore, helped by its SUV business, though weaker farm equipment and higher commodity costs weighed on margins. UNO Minda jumped 11.5% to ₹1,335, a fresh 52-week high, on 10.4 times its usual volume, and Ashok Leyland 10.5% to ₹170.21 on 7.6 times.

Why it matters: Auto was the day's best sector, up 4.1%. M&M's futures saw short covering — traders closing bets against it as it rose — with open interest down 8.6%. The AMR gives no reason for UNO Minda's or Ashok Leyland's moves.

Bajaj Finance, Motilal Oswal

+7.7% / +8.1%
Financials

Bajaj Finance rose 7.7% to ₹1,070 on 3.6 times its usual volume, and Motilal Oswal 8.1% to ₹1,095. Among non-F&O stocks, Authum Investment rose 10.4% and Piramal Finance 8.9%.

Why it matters: The AMR gives no reason for these moves. Financial Services rose 4.0%, and Bajaj Finance futures saw short covering. Its research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.

Bharti Airtel, LIC

Profit +24% / +20%
Results

Bharti Airtel's consolidated net profit rose 24% to ₹10,710 crore and revenue 16.7% to ₹60,878 crore; average revenue per user (ARPU) rose to ₹271 from ₹256. LIC's net profit rose 20% to ₹12,076 crore in Q2 FY27 and net premium income 16.2% to ₹1.47 lakh crore.

Why it matters: The AMR credits Airtel's India growth to customer additions and better realisations, and LIC's premium growth to higher renewal premiums.

ONGC, Adani Ports, Aptus Value Housing

Profit +57% / deal / −12.8%
Laggards

ONGC's Q2 FY27 net profit rose 57% to ₹15,489 crore but fell from ₹17,034 crore in the June quarter; Adani Ports agreed to buy Netherlands-based Evos at an enterprise value of €2.56 billion. Both were among the Nifty 50's top losers, per Kotak Neo. Aptus Value Housing fell 12.8% to ₹179.93 on 10.9 times its usual volume, the biggest non-F&O loser.

Why it matters: Our sources give no reason for these share moves. Several oil producers and refiners also fell: Oil India 4.0%, Chennai Petroleum 9.5% and Mangalore Refinery 7.2%.

Why Markets Moved

A big gap-up, a quiet morning and an afternoon push past 24,500. Nifty opened with a 417-point gap-up at about 24,378, which the AMR links to buoyant global markets and a sharp fall in oil prices after the US midterm elections. It slipped to a low of 24,296 in the opening minutes — still well above Wednesday's close of 23,960.60 — recovered towards 24,440 around 9:50 AM, eased back towards 24,350 by 10:45 AM and then held between about 24,350 and 24,420 through the rest of the morning. Buying picked up after midday, taking it above 24,450 around 1 PM and past 24,500 after 1:30 PM to a high of 24,580 around 1:45 PM. Some profit-taking pulled it back towards 24,500 by 2:20 PM before it recovered towards 24,560 and closed at 24,536.60. The AMR credits easing oil prices and positive global cues. Unlike Wednesday, the largest companies led: the Nifty 50 rose 2.4% against the Smallcap 250's 0.8%.

Domestic institutions sold a net ₹10,445 crore, their fifth net sale in a row and also the largest of the ten sessions.

  • Earlier days: As on Wednesday, the AMR's chart matches earlier reports for domestic institutions but appears to place foreign-investor values one session off their dates, and it now shows ₹3,271 crore, ₹6,899 crore and ₹7,861 crore against November 2, 3 and 4. Because we cannot tell which session each belongs to, we have not taken revisions from it; the November 3 and 4 foreign figures remain NSE's provisional numbers until we can confirm NSDL's.

  • Derivatives: Foreign investors bought a net ₹7,884 crore of index futures on notional value, ₹11,461 crore of index options, ₹2,936 crore of stock futures and ₹1,171 crore of stock options. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day: What the 200-day moving average is, and why Thursday's close above it drew attention

A moving average is the average closing price over a set number of recent sessions, recalculated every day — so as each new day is added and the oldest dropped, the average "moves". The 200-day average covers roughly the last ten months of trading. Because it smooths out day-to-day swings, many market commentators use it as a rough dividing line for the long-term trend: above it, prices are higher than their recent long-run average; below it, lower.

On Wednesday the Nifty closed 0.2% below its 200-day average, which the AMR then put at 24,004. On Thursday it closed at 24,536.60, about 2.2% above that average, now at 23,999, and the AMR calls that level an important one to watch after the breakout. The same idea applies to individual stocks and sectors: 47% of Nifty 500 stocks are now above their own 200-day averages, and 12 of 15 sectors are above theirs.

A moving average describes where prices have been; it does not say where they go next, and indices often cross back and forth over it. For a mutual-fund investor, it is a way to read market commentary, not a signal — a SIP, for example, keeps buying units at whatever level the market is on each instalment date.

  • A moving average is the average of the last set number of closing prices, updated daily.
  • The 200-day average is widely used as a rough marker of the long-term trend.
  • It looks backwards; crossing it describes the trend, it does not forecast the next move.
