Nifty falls 0.5% to 22,688 for a third straight day as Brent nears $112; small caps slide again

Nifty fell 0.54% to 22,687.65 and Sensex 0.62% to 73,249.39 — a third straight fall — as Brent crude climbed toward $112 a barrel, near its highest since May, after a drone attack on a Saudi Aramco oilfield and fears of renewed US strikes on Iran. After a 123-point gap-down open, Nifty swung between about 22,560 and 22,785 and closed almost exactly where it opened. Twelve of 15 sectors fell, led by Media (-2.4%) and FMCG (-1.4%); IT gave back 1.1%. Decliners beat advancers 1,690 to 636, new lows beat highs 73 to 2, and the Fear & Greed Index stayed at 13. The rupee ended an eight-session winning streak. Nifty 50 and Next 50 trade near their lowest trailing P/E since April 2021. NSE's provisional data showed foreign investors selling ₹3,459 crore; NSDL's later figure shows a ₹1,407 crore purchase.

Day in Brief

Oil's climb capped every rebound

Nifty opened 123 points lower at 22,688 as oil touched its highest level since May, swung between about 22,560 and 22,785 through a volatile session, and closed at 22,687.65 — almost exactly where it opened, but 0.54% below Wednesday's close. It was the third straight fall. Only three sectors edged up, led by Pharma, while Media fell 2.4%, and smaller companies again fell more than the Nifty.

Key insights

  • Nifty fell 123.70 points (-0.54%) to 22,687.65 and Sensex 460.30 points (-0.62%) to 73,249.39 — a third straight fall — after a 123-point gap-down open.

    • Nifty dropped toward 22,560 in the opening minutes, rallied to an intraday high near 22,785 by 11:10 AM, then gave it up; rebounds toward 22,750 around 12:50 PM and 22,705 at 2:40 PM also faded.
    • Over the three sessions since October 16, Nifty has lost 458.50 points, or 2.0%.
  • Oil was the main weight: Brent climbed toward $112 a barrel, near its highest since May, after a drone attack on a Saudi Aramco oilfield and fears of renewed US strikes on Iran.

    • Reports of a possible US-Israeli military operation, and a US order for non-emergency personnel to leave Saudi Arabia, added to supply worries. MCX crude was up 2.4% by 19:28 IST and 9.7% over 20 sessions.
    • The rupee weakened 0.4% to ₹94.8175 per dollar, ending an eight-session winning streak, after touching a six-week high earlier in the day.
  • Only three of 15 sectors rose, each by about 0.1% — Pharma, PSU Bank and Healthcare — while Media fell 2.4%, FMCG 1.4% and IT 1.1%, giving back part of Wednesday's 2.9% gain.

    • IT is now the only sector above all four key moving averages; Media dropped off that list.
    • Indian Hotels rose 3.9% on 6.3 times its usual volume to a fresh 52-week high, while KEI Industries fell 8.4% on 8 times its usual volume.
  • Smaller companies fell further again: Smallcap 250 lost 1.1%, Microcap 250 1.0% and Midcap 150 0.8%. Smallcap 250 is now down 5.5% over five sessions and 7.7% over 20.

    • Decliners outnumbered advancers 1,690 to 636, and new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 73 to 2. Only 13.1% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average.
    • The After Market Fear & Greed Index stayed at 13, in extreme fear, against 28 a week earlier.
  • On trailing earnings, the Nifty 50 (19.1x) and Nifty Next 50 (17.5x) are cheaper than on virtually every day since April 2021, while the Smallcap 250 (32.1x) is still more expensive than on 76% of days.

    • Large-cap valuations have come down a long way; small-cap valuations remain above their five-year median of 28.9x even after the recent fall.
    • Valuation describes how much investors pay for each rupee of earnings; on its own, it doesn't predict short-term moves.

Swiggy

-5.5%
Consumer internet

Fell to ₹211.40 on twice its usual volume. Its quarterly results showed a consolidated net loss of ₹922 crore, narrower than ₹1,092 crore a year earlier, on revenue up 36.1% to ₹7,571 crore. Food delivery is improving: gross order value rose 17.7% to ₹10,054 crore, with adjusted EBITDA of ₹341 crore.

Why it matters: Results season is testing the consumer-internet platforms: Eternal, owner of Zomato and Blinkit, reported on Wednesday and Swiggy on Thursday.

KEI Industries, Finolex Cables

-8.4% / -5.2%
Cables and wires

KEI Industries fell 8.4% to ₹3,873 on 8 times its usual volume, the day's weakest F&O stock. Finolex Cables, outside F&O, fell 5.2%.

Why it matters: The AMR notes that, since 2021, falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week.

Indian Hotels

+3.9%
Hotels

Rose to ₹782.30 on 6.3 times its usual volume, a fresh 52-week high. ITC Hotels, outside F&O, gained 3.6%.

Why it matters: One of only two Nifty 500 stocks to reach a new 52-week high, on a day with 73 new lows.

Tata Teleservices, International Gemmological Institute

+18.6% / +10.0%
Non-F&O movers

Tata Teleservices jumped 18.6% to ₹38.01 on 44 times its usual volume, and International Gemmological Institute 10.0% to ₹353.20 on 13.5 times.

Why it matters: The AMR's research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.

Adani Energy Solutions, UltraTech Cement

Results and commentary

Adani Energy Solutions' net profit rose 148% to ₹1,323 crore and revenue 53% to ₹10,075 crore, driven by its transmission business and its smart-metering and energy-solutions segment, whose revenue rose nearly elevenfold. UltraTech's CFO Atul Daga said cement prices, which usually slip in the monsoon months, largely held up this year and turned firmly upward in the second half of September.

Why it matters: UltraTech's CFO said the price run rate going into the third quarter is "materially better" than the second-quarter average — a sign of firmer pricing after the monsoon.

Why Markets Moved

A volatile day that ended where it began. Nifty opened with a 123-point gap down at 22,688, extending Wednesday's weakness as oil touched its highest level since May. It plunged toward 22,560 in the opening minutes, recovered to 22,650 by 9:45 AM and slipped back toward 22,600 by 10 AM. Buying then lifted it above 22,700 and toward an intraday high near 22,785 by 11:10 AM, but selling at higher levels dragged it back toward 22,620 by 11:45 AM. Another rebound toward 22,750 around 12:50 PM faded quickly, and the index spent much of the afternoon between 22,620 and 22,650. A push toward 22,705 at 2:40 PM was erased, and late buying lifted Nifty to a close of 22,687.65 — almost unchanged from its open, but about 120 points below Wednesday's close.

Global indices — Asian closes; Europe and US mid-session at 19:28 IST, October 22 — seven of eight fell

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:28 IST, October 22, 2026. European and US figures were still moving when captured.

  • Oil set the tone: Brent December futures were at $111.71 a barrel and US crude at $99.32 around 3:36 PM, per Kotak Neo, after a drone attack on a Saudi Aramco oilfield deepened worries about supplies from the widening West Asia conflict.

  • Smaller companies kept falling: Midcap 150 fell 0.8%, Smallcap 250 1.1% and Microcap 250 1.0%. Over five sessions they are down 3.6%, 5.5% and 6.1%, while the Nifty 50 is up 0.3%.

  • Valuations: Nifty 50 trades at 19.1x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 17.5x, both lower than on virtually every day since April 2021. Midcap 150, at 27.0x, is lower than on 68% of days, while Smallcap 250, at 32.1x, is higher than on 76%.

  • Where the options market is positioned: Put writing strengthened, lifting the put-call ratio from 0.78 to 0.88. Options imply a range of about 22,410 to 23,010 into the October 27 expiry, with the largest put positions at 22,000 and call positions at 24,000. The AMR sees the 20-day moving average, at 22,756, as the first trend hurdle.

  • Commodities: By 19:28 IST MCX crude was up 2.4% at ₹9,428, while gold fell 1.4% to ₹1,43,975 and silver 3.9% to ₹2,01,047; silver is down 14.8% over 20 sessions. Copper fell 1.9%.

Global Brief

  • Oil near its highest since May: Brent climbed toward $112 a barrel amid fears of renewed US strikes against Iran. Reports of a potential US-Israeli military operation and Washington's evacuation order for non-emergency personnel in Saudi Arabia added to concerns about escalating regional tensions.

  • Meta: a strong quarter and a costly verdict: Meta's third-quarter revenue rose 26% from a year earlier, beating expectations; it projected fourth-quarter revenue of $73–76 billion and raised the lower end of its capital-spending forecast as it builds AI infrastructure. Separately, a New Mexico judge ordered it to pay $25 billion after a jury found it misled consumers about the privacy of their data, in a case stemming from the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

  • Barclays to cut about 5,000 jobs: The bank plans to cut roughly 5% of its workforce as part of a cost-reduction drive, citing AI-driven efficiencies and organisational simplification.

  • Apple rations its first foldable: Apple limited pre-orders of the iPhone Duo to two per customer; launch-day delivery slots reportedly sold out within minutes, and some customers face waits into November and December.

India Brief

  • SEBI eases margins for early pay-in: Investors can now use the value of shares delivered through the Early Pay-In (EPI) facility to meet margin requirements for subsequent trades, reducing the need for extra margin money in the cash market.

  • Rupee's winning streak ends: The rupee weakened 0.4% to ₹94.8175 per dollar, ending an eight-session winning streak, as Brent rose and Middle East tensions escalated — despite touching a six-week high earlier in the session.

  • NCDEX moves into equities: The commodity exchange announced its entry into equity and equity-derivatives markets with two indices: NDEX, tracking 20 large and liquid Indian stocks, and FINNDEX, of 15 financial-sector stocks.

  • Himadri's ₹1,613 crore expansion: Himadri Speciality Chemicals plans to invest across lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery materials, speciality chemicals, carbon nanotubes and speciality carbon black, with projects expected to finish by the fourth quarter of next financial year.

  • Copper demand up 12%: India's copper demand rose 12% to 2,100 kilotonnes in FY26 from 1,878 kilotonnes, per the International Copper Association India, on demand from infrastructure, automobiles and construction.

FII/DII Flows

Net buying (+) or selling (−) of Indian shares by foreign and domestic institutions, last ten sessions (₹ crore)

Source: NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, as reported in the Zerodha After Market Report, October 22–23, 2026. October 22's foreign figure is NSDL's; the provisional exchange figure that evening was a net sale of ₹3,459 crore.

  • Today's figure flipped: NSE's provisional data on the evening of October 22 showed foreign investors selling a net ₹3,459 crore. NSDL's custody data, reported the next day, shows a net purchase of ₹1,407 crore instead — a swing of ₹4,866 crore. This edition uses the NSDL figure; see the Concept of the Day for why the two differ.

  • Domestic institutions kept buying: Domestic institutions bought a net ₹2,891 crore, their ninth purchase in the last ten sessions. Over those ten sessions, foreign investors sold a net ₹25,099 crore and domestic institutions bought ₹30,964 crore.

  • Derivatives: Foreign investors sold a net ₹6,781 crore of index options and ₹407 crore of index futures on notional value, and bought ₹1,265 crore of stock futures and ₹29 crore of stock options. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

Why the day's first foreign-flow number is often revised

Every evening, the exchanges publish a provisional figure for how much foreign portfolio investors bought or sold in the cash market that day. It arrives quickly, so it makes the headlines. A fuller figure comes from NSDL, the depository that compiles foreign investors' transactions as reported by their custodian banks, usually a day later.

The two measure slightly different things. The exchange figure counts trades on the stock exchanges that day. NSDL's data, reported by custodians, also captures other channels such as primary-market purchases — for example, shares allotted in IPOs — and can be recorded on a different day from the trade. The gap can be large: today's provisional ₹3,459 crore sale became a ₹1,407 crore purchase in NSDL's data.

That is why Orvaa Daily doesn't lead with the latest day's provisional figure, and adds a dated correction when a revision changes the story. Provisional figures were revised in five of the seven sessions from October 8 to 16, and again today. For a fund investor, a single day's flow matters far less than the trend over weeks and months — and domestic institutions, which include mutual funds investing SIP money, have bought on nine of the last ten sessions.

  • The exchanges' evening FII figure is provisional; NSDL's custody data is the fuller record.
  • Revisions can be large enough to turn a reported sale into a purchase.
  • Flows over weeks and months tell you far more than any single day's number.
