Day in Brief

From a weak open to the first gain in five sessions

Nifty opened 76 points lower at 22,524 on weak global cues and fell toward 22,400 in the first 15 minutes. Buying from those lows lifted it through the day, and it closed at 22,753.20, up 0.68% and about 229 points above its open — ending a four-session losing streak. Thirteen of 15 sectors rose, led by Metal and Pharma, and advancers outnumbered decliners for the first time since October 16. Oil eased on hopes of diplomacy between the US and Iran.

Key insights

  • Nifty rose 153.20 points (+0.68%) to 22,753.20 and Sensex 482.92 points (+0.66%) to 73,606.75 — the biggest gain since October 15 — ending a four-day losing streak.

    • Nifty opened 76 points lower at 22,524, tracking weak global cues — elevated oil and growing concern about debt linked to the AI investment boom — and fell toward 22,400 within 15 minutes before buying set in.
    • It climbed above 22,700 around 2:05 PM and closed about 350 points above its morning low, but remains 1.7% lower over five sessions.
  • Thirteen of 15 sectors rose, led by Metal (+2.2%), Healthcare and Pharma (each +1.8%) and Oil & Gas (+1.4%); only Consumer Durables (-0.2%) and Media (-0.3%) slipped.

    • Ather Energy rose 14.1%, Dr. Reddy's 6.6% on 4.8 times its usual volume, and JSW Steel 6.3% after reporting on Friday that its quarterly profit had more than tripled.
    • AU Small Finance Bank fell 6.8% on 5.7 times its usual volume, the weakest F&O stock.
  • The rally was broad — advancers beat decliners 1,337 to 1,002, and Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 each rose 1.1% — but only 12.6% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average, and new 52-week lows still outnumbered highs 46 to 3.

    • Over 20 sessions, Smallcap 250 is down 8.7% and Midcap 150 7.4%, against 1.3% for the Nifty 50.
    • The AMR describes the broader market as still weak despite the day's gains.
  • The After Market Fear & Greed Index rose from 11 to 20, still in extreme fear, as foreign investors' positioning improved: they bought a net 3,078 index-futures contracts worth ₹445 crore, and the put-call ratio jumped from 0.81 to 1.11 as put writing strengthened.

    • Foreign investors now hold 12.6% of their index-futures positions long — higher than on 61% of days in the past year — while retail and HNI traders' long share eased to 80%.
    • Options imply a range of about 22,580 to 22,957 for Tuesday's October 27 expiry, with the largest put open interest at 22,500 and call open interest at 23,000.
  • Oil eased — Brent December futures near $110 a barrel and US crude near $101 — as diplomatic efforts involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey raised hopes of easing US-Iran tensions. In Brazil, stocks plunged after President Lula's narrow re-election.

    • MCX crude was down 1.9% by 20:02 IST, though still up 12.7% over 20 sessions.
    • Brazil's Ibovespa fell more than 10% at the open, triggering an automatic trading halt, and the real weakened sharply; reports of the full size of the fall differ.

JSW Steel

+6.3%
Metals

Rose to ₹1,260 on 1.9 times its usual volume, in the first session after reporting that its quarterly net profit more than tripled to ₹5,359 crore, with record steel sales of 7.46 million tonnes.

Why it matters: It led the Metal index, the day's best sector at +2.2%.

Dr. Reddy's, Mankind Pharma

Dr. Reddy's +6.6%
Pharma

Dr. Reddy's rose 6.6% to ₹1,311 on 4.8 times its usual volume. Mankind Pharma reported net profit up 37.7% to ₹716 crore on revenue up 17.3% to ₹4,338 crore, helped by domestic demand for chronic therapies — medicines for long-term illnesses.

Why it matters: Pharma and Healthcare were the second- and third-best sectors, each up 1.8%.

Ather Energy, Swiggy, Adani Green Energy

+14.1% / +5.5% / +5.5%
F&O gainers

Ather Energy jumped 14.1% to ₹1,575 on 2.7 times its usual volume, the best F&O stock. Swiggy rose 5.5% to ₹185.75 on 3.3 times, after Friday's 16.8% fall, and Adani Green Energy 5.5% to ₹1,250.

Why it matters: Swiggy won back just over a quarter of Friday's fall. The AMR's research notes that, since 2021, heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.

AU Small Finance Bank, Shriram Finance, Bank of India

-6.8% / -4.6% / -3.6%
Lenders

AU Small Finance Bank fell 6.8% to ₹869 on 5.7 times its usual volume, Shriram Finance 4.6% to ₹825 on 2.5 times and Bank of India 3.6% on 2.8 times. Outside F&O, Five-Star Business Finance fell 7.5% and City Union Bank 6.3%.

Why it matters: The AMR notes that, since 2021, falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week.

Infosys

IT

The shares fell as much as about 4% during the session, per Business Standard, in their first trading day after the company cut its FY27 revenue growth guidance to 1–2% from 1.5–3%. Separately, HCLTech announced a partnership with Japanese chipmaker Rapidus to develop next-generation semiconductor technologies, with engineering centres in Bengaluru and Hubli.

Why it matters: Infosys is among the largest holdings of many diversified equity funds, so its moves show up widely in fund NAVs.

Mangalore Refinery, Tata Teleservices, MTAR Technologies

+12.6% / +10.2%
Non-F&O movers

Mangalore Refinery jumped 12.6% to ₹182.61 on 8.2 times its usual volume and Tata Teleservices 10.2% to ₹41.53 on 8 times. MTAR Technologies saw a sharp delivery spike: 43% of the shares traded were taken to delivery, against its usual 18%.

Why it matters: A high delivery share means more buyers kept the shares rather than trading in and out the same day.

Why Markets Moved

A weak open, then a steady climb. Nifty opened with a 76-point gap down at 22,524, tracking weak global cues amid elevated oil prices and growing concern about debt markets linked to the AI investment boom, and slipped toward 22,400 within 15 minutes. Buying emerged from the lows, pushing it back above 22,500 by 9:45 AM and toward 22,700 around 10:15 AM. Selling returned at higher levels, dragging it below 22,600 by 11 AM and toward 22,535 around 11:30 AM, before a recovery toward 22,600 by noon. After another dip toward 22,580, buying strengthened after 1 PM: Nifty reclaimed 22,650 by 1:20 PM, climbed above 22,700 around 2:05 PM and consolidated between 22,680 and 22,710 before a strong finish took it to 22,753.20, about 229 points above its open.

Global indices — Asian closes; Europe and US mid-session at 20:02 IST, October 26

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 20:02 IST, October 26, 2026. European and US figures were still moving when captured.

  • Oil eased from last week's highs: Brent December futures were at $110.19 a barrel and US crude at $101.42 during Indian market hours, per Kotak Neo, down from Brent's high near $115 on Friday. Supply worries persisted after recent attacks on Saudi Arabia, but oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have recovered to near pre-war levels.

  • Smaller companies joined in: Next 50 rose 1.0%, Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 1.1% each, and Microcap 250 0.4%. Over five sessions they are still down 3.6%, 4.2%, 6.0% and 7.0%.

  • Valuations: Nifty 50 trades at 19.2x trailing earnings, lower than on 99% of days since April 2021, and Next 50 at 17.2x. Midcap 150 is at 26.7x, lower than on 71% of days, while Smallcap 250, at 31.2x, is higher than on 70%.

  • Into Tuesday's expiry: Put writing strengthened, lifting the put-call ratio from 0.81 to 1.11, and downside protection became more expensive. Options imply a range of about 22,580 to 22,957 for the October 27 expiry, with the largest put positions at 22,500 and call positions at 23,000. The AMR sees the 50-day average, at 23,370, as the next major trend hurdle.

  • Commodities: By 20:02 IST MCX crude was down 1.9% at ₹9,611 but up 12.7% over 20 sessions. Gold rose 0.5% to ₹1,42,736 and silver slipped 0.6% to ₹1,94,632; silver is down 17.1% over 20 sessions. Zinc rose 2.2%.

Global Brief

  • Brazil's markets plunge after Lula's re-election: President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva narrowly won Sunday's runoff, with about 51.8% of valid votes against Flávio Bolsonaro's 48.2%. On Monday the Ibovespa fell more than 10% at the open, triggering an automatic trading halt, and the real weakened sharply; reports of the full size of the fall differ.

  • Oil eases on diplomacy: Crude prices declined as renewed diplomatic efforts involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey raised hopes of easing US-Iran tensions, and as shipments through the Strait of Hormuz recovered to near pre-war levels despite continued attacks on vessels.

  • SpaceX borrows $40 billion for AI chips: SpaceX secured $40 billion of debt financing to buy GPUs for AI computing, backed by revenue from its Starlink and launch businesses. Elon Musk warned that AI-focused cloud companies without independent revenue could face funding constraints, consolidation and failures — part of a wider debate about debt linked to the AI investment boom.

  • Verizon beats on subscribers: Verizon raised its annual wireless subscriber growth forecast after adding 406,000 postpaid subscribers in the third quarter, nearly double analysts' expectations, and signed an AI-infrastructure agreement worth over $2 billion with Amazon Web Services.

India Brief

  • Export support extended: The government extended the RELIEF scheme by six months to March 31, 2027, to support exporters facing higher shipping and insurance costs from West Asia tensions. Eligible exporters can get 95% risk cover through ECGC and protection against insurance premiums rising beyond pre-disruption levels.

  • Tata Communications' AI network: Tata Communications plans to invest $400–450 million over three to five years in a 10,000-km fibre network connecting major data centres and AI hubs across India, with 7.2 petabytes of capacity.

  • Results: Mankind Pharma and ITC Hotels: Mankind Pharma's net profit rose 37.7% to ₹716 crore on revenue up 17.3% to ₹4,338 crore. ITC Hotels' net profit rose 52% to ₹203 crore, with revenue from operations up 26% to ₹1,054 crore.

  • Watching the monsoon deficit: Kotak Mahindra Bank's retail banking management said collection efficiency on tractor loans has improved significantly, with no visible impact on delinquencies as of the second quarter, but that it remains watchful, noting this monsoon's rainfall deficit of about 13%.

  • Today: Foreign investors bought a net ₹2,098 crore and domestic institutions ₹2,610 crore. The latest day's foreign figure may still be revised. Over the last ten sessions, foreign investors sold a net ₹6,114 crore and domestic institutions bought ₹21,363 crore.

  • Derivatives: Foreign investors bought a net ₹4,716 crore of stock futures and ₹445 crore of index futures on notional value, and sold ₹1,484 crore of stock options and ₹7,790 crore of index options. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

Why oil prices move Indian markets

Oil has been the market's main worry this month: Brent rose to about $115 a barrel last week, its highest since May, and MCX crude is up about 13% over 20 sessions. India imports most of the crude oil it uses — more than 80% — so a higher price means paying more dollars for the same barrels.

That ripples outward. A bigger import bill tends to weaken the rupee and widen the current-account deficit. Fuel and transport costs feed into inflation, which can keep interest rates and bond yields higher — India's 10-year yield reached 7.44% last week, its highest since March 2023. Companies that use oil as a raw material, such as paint, chemical, tyre and airline businesses, see their costs rise, while oil producers can benefit.

For a fund investor, oil is one of many forces that move markets in the short run, and one of the hardest to forecast — prices have swung on news from the Middle East all month. Diversified equity funds hold both the companies hurt by expensive oil and those that gain from it, and a long-term plan doesn't depend on predicting the next move in crude.

  • India imports most of its oil, so higher prices raise the import bill and pressure the rupee.
  • Expensive oil can lift inflation and bond yields, which weighs on both bond and share prices.
  • The effects differ by sector: costs rise for oil users, while producers can gain.
