Day in Brief

A flat index hid a broad rally

Nifty opened 44 points lower at 22,709 as IT stocks slipped on reports that Microsoft is offering buyouts to about a quarter of its workforce. It swung between about 22,640 and 22,830 through the October monthly expiry and closed at 22,749.75, just 3.45 points below Monday. Underneath, most stocks rose: advancers outnumbered decliners nearly three to one, the Smallcap 250 gained 2.2%, and 11 of 15 sectors ended higher, led by Media (+3.7%). Banks and financial services held the index back.

Key insights

  • Nifty slipped 3.45 points (-0.02%) to 22,749.75 and Sensex 8.08 points (-0.01%) to 73,598.67 on the October monthly expiry, after an intraday range of about 22,640 to 22,830.

    • Nifty opened with a 44-point gap down at 22,709, rallied toward 22,800 by 10 AM and to an intraday high near 22,830 around 12:40 PM, then fell to a low near 22,640 around 2:15 PM before recovering after 2:30 PM.
    • It closed about 41 points above its opening level and held most of Monday's 153-point rebound; over five sessions it is down 0.6%.
  • Most stocks rose even as the index stood still: 1,695 advanced against 639 that fell, and Smallcap 250 gained 2.2%, Microcap 250 1.7%, Next 50 1.3% and Midcap 150 0.9%.

    • The share of Nifty 500 stocks above their 50-day average jumped from 12.6% to 17.6%, and new 52-week highs rose to 7, against 35 new lows.
    • The only falling sectors were Bank and Private Bank (each -0.7%), Financial Services (-0.6%) and IT (-0.3%) — the biggest sector weights in the Nifty 50, which held the index back.
  • Media jumped 3.7% to lead 11 rising sectors, followed by Realty and Pharma (+1.9% each), Chemicals (+1.8%), Healthcare (+1.6%) and Auto (+1.5%).

    • Sona BLW rose 8.9% on 8.1 times its usual volume to a fresh 52-week high, and Mankind Pharma 8.2% on 4.9 times; Mazagon Dock fell 6.5% on 6.5 times.
    • IT and Media remain the strongest sectors over 20 and 60 sessions, and the only two above all four key moving averages.
  • Results were mixed: Larsen & Toubro's profit rose 33% and Bajaj Auto's 62%, while Maruti Suzuki's ₹2,415 crore profit fell short of the ₹3,105 crore analysts expected, Cipla's profit fell 35% and ACC's about 91%.

    • L&T's order inflows rose 28% to ₹1.48 lakh crore, and Bajaj Auto's exports jumped 41%.
    • Maruti cited rising steel and copper prices. ACC cited weaker cement demand, higher fuel costs and severance expenses, against a year-ago quarter that included a ₹671 crore one-time tax write-back.
  • The government has sought feedback from investors, market participants and tax experts on long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and the securities transaction tax (STT), amid persistent foreign outflows.

    • Equity mutual fund investors pay LTCG tax on gains from units held for more than a year, so any change would affect them directly. No proposal has been announced; on October 13, the Finance Minister said the government was open to discussing both taxes.
    • Separately, SEBI whole-time member KVR Murty said "some guardrails may be required" given heightened activity on expiry days — see today's Concept of the Day.

Larsen & Toubro

Capital goods

Consolidated net profit rose 33% to ₹5,202 crore and revenue 16% to ₹78,750 crore on strong execution across projects and manufacturing. Order inflows rose 28% to ₹1.48 lakh crore, helped by large contracts in hydrocarbons, power transmission and infrastructure.

Why it matters: L&T's order inflows are widely watched as a read on project and capital spending in India and abroad.

Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki

Nifty Auto +1.5%
Auto

Bajaj Auto's net profit rose 62% to ₹3,436 crore on revenue up 59% to ₹25,126 crore, with vehicle sales up 20% to 15.4 lakh units — exports up 41%, domestic sales 4%. Maruti Suzuki's net profit of ₹2,415 crore missed analysts' estimates of ₹3,105 crore, although revenue grew 26% to ₹53,340 crore on strong demand for compact cars ahead of the festive season.

Why it matters: Demand is holding up, but Maruti said rising steel and copper prices weighed on profitability — raw-material costs are a key swing factor for carmakers' margins.

Sona BLW, Mankind Pharma

+8.9% / +8.2%
F&O gainers

Sona BLW rose 8.9% to ₹851.85 on 8.1 times its usual volume, a fresh 52-week high, and Mankind Pharma 8.2% to ₹2,502 on 4.9 times. Tata Consumer Products (+6.8% on 5.6 times its usual volume), APL Apollo Tubes (+6.5%) and Ather Energy (+6.3%) completed the top five.

Why it matters: Both Sona BLW and Mankind were due to report results on Monday; Mankind's profit rose 37.7%. The AMR's research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.

Cipla, ACC, Ambuja Cements, Dalmia Bharat

Pharma and cement

Cipla's net profit fell 35% to ₹878 crore and revenue 2.4% to ₹7,404 crore as expenses rose. ACC's standalone profit fell about 91% to ₹101 crore on revenue down 4.7% to ₹5,612 crore. Among cement stocks, Ambuja Cements fell 5.2% on 5 times its usual volume and Dalmia Bharat 6.6% on 9.6 times.

Why it matters: ACC cited weaker cement demand and higher fuel costs; last week UltraTech's CFO had said cement prices turned firmly upward in late September.

Mazagon Dock, REC, One 97 Communications (Paytm)

-6.5% / -3.9% / -3.2%
F&O losers

Mazagon Dock fell 6.5% to ₹1,754 on 6.5 times its usual volume, REC 3.9% to ₹286.50 on 2.1 times and One 97 Communications 3.2% to ₹1,602; AU Small Finance Bank slipped another 2.4%.

Why it matters: The AMR notes that, since 2021, falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the average stock over the following week.

Ola Electric, Onesource Specialty Pharma, Acutaas Chemicals, Sun TV Network

+16.2% / +13.8% / +13.3% / +10.9%
Non-F&O movers

Ola Electric jumped 16.2% to ₹34.80, Onesource Specialty Pharma 13.8% to ₹1,590 on 31 times its usual volume, Acutaas Chemicals 13.3% on 11.9 times and Sun TV Network 10.9% to ₹634.55. MTAR Technologies saw another delivery spike: 54% of the shares traded were taken to delivery, against its usual 20%.

Why it matters: Sun TV's jump came on a day when Media was the best sector, up 3.7%.

Why Markets Moved

A volatile expiry that ended where Monday did. Nifty opened with a 44-point gap down at 22,709, tracking lacklustre global cues and weakness in IT stocks after reports that Microsoft is offering voluntary exit packages to about a quarter of its global workforce. It slipped toward 22,660 in the opening minutes, recovered sharply toward 22,800 around 10 AM and swung between about 22,700 and 22,780 through the morning. The afternoon opened strongly, with an intraday high near 22,830 around 12:40 PM, but sharp selling dragged the index below 22,690 by 1:15 PM and to a low near 22,640 around 2:15 PM. A recovery after 2:30 PM lifted it back toward 22,770 by 3 PM, and Nifty closed at 22,749.75 — about 41 points above its open and almost unchanged from Monday.

Global indices — Asian closes; Europe and US mid-session at 20:23 IST, October 27 — four of eight rose

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 20:23 IST, October 27, 2026. European and US figures were still moving when captured.

  • Expiry-day positioning: Call writing strengthened, pulling the put-call ratio down from 1.11 to 1.05, and implied volatility eased from 16.9% to 15.4%. For the November 3 expiry, options imply a range of about 22,377 to 23,153, with the largest put positions at 22,000 and call positions at 23,500. The AMR sees the 50-day moving average, at 23,338, as the next major trend hurdle.

  • Smaller companies led — from a low base: Smallcap 250 rose 2.2%, Microcap 250 1.7% and Midcap 150 0.9%. Over 20 sessions they are still down 6.8%, 8.1% and 6.4%, against 1.7% for the Nifty 50.

  • Valuations: Nifty 50 trades at 19.1x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 17.2x, both lower than on virtually every day since April 2021. Midcap 150, at 26.5x, is lower than on 73% of days, while Smallcap 250, at 31.8x, is higher than on 73%.

  • Oil and commodities: Brent December futures were at $110.95 a barrel and US crude at $102.04 around 3:36 PM, per Kotak Neo — near six-month highs after fresh attacks on Saudi Arabia, though prices eased on hopes the US-Iran conflict could move toward resolution. By 20:23 IST MCX crude was down 1.9% at ₹9,537, still up 11.1% over 20 sessions; gold rose 0.5% to ₹1,43,800 and silver 0.3% to ₹1,96,364.

  • Monday's figure held: Monday's foreign purchase of ₹2,098 crore was unchanged in NSDL's data, so no correction is needed to the October 26 edition.

  • Today: Provisional exchange data show foreign investors buying a net ₹4,240 crore and domestic institutions selling ₹1,250 crore — the institutions' first net sale since October 16. The foreign figure may be revised: last Thursday's provisional ₹3,459 crore sale became a ₹1,407 crore purchase in NSDL's data. Including today's provisional figure, foreign investors bought a net ₹1,378 crore over the last ten sessions and domestic institutions ₹17,068 crore.

  • Derivatives: Foreign investors bought a net ₹20,259 crore of index options on notional value, ₹3,161 crore of stock futures and ₹383 crore of stock options, and sold ₹2,849 crore of index futures. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

Why SEBI keeps a close eye on expiry days

Tuesday was the monthly expiry of Nifty's October futures and options — the day those contracts settle. Expiry days often bring sharp intraday swings as traders close or roll over their positions: today Nifty moved within a range of nearly 200 points and still ended almost unchanged from Monday.

Much of that activity is in index options, and much of it comes from individuals. SEBI's own study found that about 93% of individual equity F&O traders — more than one crore people — lost money over the three years to March 2024, an average of about ₹2 lakh each including trading costs. Options can expire worthless, and leverage magnifies losses as well as gains.

That is why SEBI has been adding guardrails, such as larger contract sizes and fewer weekly expiries, and why one of its board members said today that more guidance may be needed for expiry-day activity. For a mutual fund investor, F&O data are useful mainly as a reading of market mood. Investing in a diversified fund through a SIP is a different activity: it doesn't depend on where the index ends on any particular day.

  • Expiry is when F&O contracts settle, and it often brings sharp intraday swings.
  • SEBI found that about 93% of individual F&O traders lost money between FY22 and FY24.
  • F&O positioning describes the market's mood; long-term fund investing doesn't rely on calling the next expiry.
