Nifty snaps a four-day slide with a second-half rally as FIIs sell ₹9,635 crore and the RBI decision looms

Nifty rose 0.60% to 22,555.75 and Sensex 0.66% to 72,382.47, snapping a four-session losing streak after a round trip: a gap-up to 22,622, a slide to about 22,397 at noon, and a sharp recovery after 1:30 PM. Twelve of fifteen sectors rose, led by FMCG (+1.8%, ITC +5.1%), while Healthcare and Pharma fell and breadth was still slightly negative (1,280 decliners to 1,030 advancers). Foreign investors sold a net ₹9,635 crore against ₹5,182 crore of DII buying, and are just 8.1% long index futures versus retail's 84%. The Nifty 50's trailing P/E of 19.3x is cheaper than on 99% of days since 2021, even as small caps remain expensive at 34.2x. Avenue Supermarts fell 6.5% despite 18.4% revenue growth, and V2 Retail dropped about 17%. All eyes turn to Tuesday's weekly expiry and Wednesday's RBI decision, where eight of ten economists polled expect a 25bps hike to 5.50%.

Day in Brief

A recovery that was earned in the second half

Markets reopened after the Gandhi Jayanti break and snapped a four-session losing streak. Nifty gapped up, gave it all back by noon, then rallied from 1:30 PM to close at 22,555.75 — its first gain since September 25 and the eve of an RBI decision that could end a long stretch of unchanged rates.

Key insights

  • Nifty rose 133.80 points (+0.60%) to 22,555.75 and Sensex gained 472.77 points (+0.66%) to 72,382.47 — but the close hid a round trip: the index opened at 22,532, hit 22,622, sank to about 22,397 near noon, then recovered more than 150 points.

    • Per the Zerodha After Market Report, Nifty was briefly below Thursday's 22,422 close around 12:10 PM before buying picked up sharply after 1:30 PM and held the 22,520-22,560 zone through the final hour.
    • Despite today's bounce, Nifty is still down 2.5% over five sessions and 5.5% over 20 — one up day does not undo a two-month slide.
  • Defensives led and breadth was better than the headline: 12 of 15 sectors rose, FMCG jumped 1.8% on ITC's 5%+ rally, and Consumer Durables and PSU Banks followed — while Healthcare (-1.0%) and Pharma (-0.7%) fell.

    • Nifty IT finished flat (0.0%) after Thursday's 2.17% surge — the AMR's F&O data shows Infosys long positions unwinding and TCS and Coforge seeing short covering, a cooling-off rather than a reversal.
    • Across all ~2,300 NSE stocks, 1,280 fell and 1,030 rose, so the average stock was still slightly negative even as the index rose — the gain was concentrated in large caps.
  • Foreign investors sold again — ₹9,635 crore net, per the AMR's NSDL-based chart — while domestic institutions bought ₹5,182 crore, the first session in five where foreign selling outweighed domestic buying.

    • FIIs have now sold in eight of the last ten sessions shown, including ₹10,743 crore on September 30 and ₹9,570 crore on October 1.
    • DII buying slowed from ₹11,272 crore (Sep 30) and ₹10,042 crore (Oct 1) to ₹5,182 crore today — the cushion is thinner than it was.
  • Valuations have reached a notable level: the Nifty 50 now trades at 19.3 times trailing earnings — lower than on 99% of days since April 2021 and well below its 5-year median of 22.1x.

    • Small caps are the exception: the Nifty Smallcap 250 trades at 34.2x, higher than on 90% of days since 2021 and well above its 28.9x median, while Midcap 150 sits at 28.2x (30.3x median).
    • Cheap is not a timing signal — the AMR itself notes that breadth and valuation levels have not reliably predicted the market's next move.
  • The positioning gap persists: foreign investors hold just 8.1% of their index-futures positions long while retail and HNI traders are 84% long — a year-high bullish extreme for retail.

    • Retail's long share has been lower on 94% of days over the past year; foreign investors' on only 8%. Domestic institutions are 76% long and brokers' own desks 67% long.
    • Foreign investors often hold shorts as a hedge against shares they own, so a low long share is not simply a bet on a fall.

ITC

+5.1%
FMCG

Closed at ₹268.90 on 3.8x its usual volume — the main driver of FMCG's 1.8% gain — with the AMR's F&O data showing a 4.8% rise in futures open interest (a long buildup).

Why it matters: A rise on heavy volume with new contracts being opened suggests fresh buying rather than just short covering.

Avenue Supermarts (DMart)

-6.5%
Retail

The weakest F&O stock, down on 5.2x usual volume to ₹3,567, even though standalone Q2 FY27 revenue rose 18.4% year-on-year to ₹19,206 crore. Futures open interest rose 18.8% (a short buildup).

Why it matters: Another day where a headline growth number was not enough — the market was apparently looking for more than 18% growth, and traders added fresh bearish positions.

V2 Retail

-17%
Retail

Slumped to a 52-week low after same-store sales fell 14.9% in Q2 FY27, partly because of the shift in the festive calendar; festival-normalised same-store growth was broadly flat at 0.5%.

Why it matters: The same festive-calendar distortion that muddied last week's auto and tractor numbers is now showing up in retail.

Kotak Mahindra Bank

Banking

Reported net advances up 24.7% year-on-year to ₹5.77 lakh crore at end-September, deposits up 23.2% to ₹6.51 lakh crore, and CASA deposits up 11.3% to ₹2.49 lakh crore.

Why it matters: Loan growth outpacing deposit growth is the usual watch-point for banks' margins; CASA growth of 11.3% is notably slower than total deposit growth.

Larsen & Toubro

+1.5%
Capital goods

Its Power Transmission & Distribution business secured multiple EPC orders worth around ₹10,000 crore across India, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Delivery share rose to about 71%, from a usual ~57%.

Why it matters: Order inflows and a jump in the share of shares held rather than traded intraday are the kind of combination that tends to signal investor conviction — though the AMR cautions such spikes have not reliably led to outperformance.

Shipping Corporation of India

+8.8%
Shipping

Jumped to ₹290.60 on 14.1x usual volume, the biggest volume spike among the day's top movers; Nuvama Wealth rose 7.0% on 12.8x volume and PhysicsWallah gained 9.1%.

Why it matters: Moves on volume this heavy are often news-driven; the AMR's own research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.

Why Markets Moved

A gap-up, a fade, and a second-half rescue. Nifty opened 110 points higher at 22,532 on positive global cues, range-bound oil and stock-specific reactions to quarterly business updates, pushing to 22,620 within 30 minutes. The strength faded by 10 AM and selling intensified through the morning, taking the index below 22,450 and to an intraday low near 22,400 around noon. From there the recovery was gradual until buying picked up sharply after 1:30 PM, lifting Nifty back above 22,500 and toward 22,550, where it consolidated into the close at 22,555.75 — about 24 points above the open and 150+ points above the low. Overseas, seven of eight major markets rose in their latest sessions, led by Japan's Nikkei (+2.3%) and the S&P 500 (+1.6%); a market report also credited softer-than-expected US jobs data (29,000 added in September against 90,000 expected) with easing worries about a Federal Reserve rate hike.

  • FMCG's rally was one stock's story, plus rotation into defensives: ITC's 5.1% jump (3.8x usual volume, long buildup in futures) did most of the work in the Nifty FMCG's 1.8% gain. The wider sector is still 10.1% below its 200-day average and 7.6% below its 100-day, so this is a bounce within a downtrend, not a trend change. Sugar stocks were the best of 80 niche themes (+4.3%) and Railways the worst of the six biggest decliners (-1.7%), per Tijori's baskets.

  • IT cooled after Thursday's surge: Nifty IT closed flat at 28,302 after last week's rally. HCL Technologies was among the five weakest F&O stocks (-3.3%), while the futures data shows TCS (-5.0% open interest) and Coforge (-4.8%) seeing short covering and Infosys long unwinding. TCS reports on Thursday, October 8; options price a move of about ±6.5% by the October 27 expiry.

  • Trading was heavier than usual: Cash turnover reached about ₹1.16 lakh crore (4.4% above the 20-session median) and value taken to delivery was ₹51,727 crore (15.6% above), suggesting genuine participation on both the morning selling and the afternoon buying.

  • Crude eased, the dollar firmed: MCX crude oil was down 3.0% by 18:59 IST (₹8,646), though it is still 3.8% higher over 20 sessions; gold fell 0.4% and is down 2.8% over 20 sessions. Saudi Arabia cut its November Arab Light price for Asian buyers to a $5-per-barrel discount to Oman-Dubai, the widest since June 2020. The euro fell to a 17-month low against the dollar on French fiscal worries, with the dollar index at 102.23, after touching its highest since April 2025.

  • Valuations are low, but earnings quality is the open question: At 19.3x trailing earnings, the Nifty 50's P/E is at the bottom 1% of readings since April 2021. Large caps are cheaper than 99% of days; small caps are the opposite — dearer than 90% of days at 34.2x. The gap says the correction has mostly hit large caps' multiples while small-cap valuations have been left comparatively stretched.

Global Brief

  • Schneider Electric to buy PTC for about $22.6 billion: Its largest-ever deal, as it expands its exposure to data centres. Schneider's shares fell nearly 10% as investors weighed the size and the premium paid.

  • US ETF inflows hit a record: Inflows into US-listed ETFs have reached over $1.54 trillion in 2026, already surpassing 2025's full-year record of $1.52 trillion with three months still to go.

  • Foxconn's AI-driven quarter: Third-quarter revenue jumped 47% year-on-year to T$3.03 trillion, beating expectations on strong AI demand in its cloud and networking business, with consumer electronics also growing.

  • Huawei and Qualcomm sign a patent licence: A broad multi-year agreement covering AI, 5G, computing and networking, which Huawei says takes the total value of its patent licensing agreements above $6.9 billion.

  • Euro at a 17-month low: The currency fell against the dollar amid France's fiscal concerns and the recent bond sell-off; the dollar index rose to 102.23.

  • India-US interim trade deal: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called it "a hard and very rigorously negotiated agreement" and said negotiations are ongoing, though she believes both sides have reached "a plateau beyond which giving or taking might be very, very difficult."

FII/DII Flows

Net buying (+) or selling (−) of Indian shares by foreign and domestic institutions, last ten sessions (₹ crore)

Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 5, 2026

  • Foreign selling outweighed domestic buying for the first time in five sessions: FIIs sold a net ₹9,635 crore against DII buying of ₹5,182 crore. Note these are NSDL custodian and exchange-reported figures from the AMR, which can differ from NSE's provisional cash-segment print.

  • In derivatives, foreign investors were net buyers of futures but sellers of options: On a notional basis they bought a net ₹2,431 crore of stock futures and ₹1,162 crore of index futures, while selling ₹2,718 crore of index options and ₹516 crore of stock options. The AMR cautions that options look larger on notional value, so the sign matters more than the size.

  • Bulk deals were small and unfamiliar names: The day's largest disclosed deal was Ashika Global Finance buying ₹50 crore of Runwal Enterprises, followed by Negen Capital's ₹30 crore purchase of Acevector. IDFC First Bank was among the sellers of Acevector (₹10 crore).

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

What does a P/E ratio at the 1st percentile actually tell you?

The Nifty 50 trades at 19.3 times its trailing earnings, lower than on 99% of days since April 2021. The price-to-earnings ratio is simply the index's price divided by the last twelve months of earnings per share: a lower number means investors are paying less for each rupee of current profit.

A low P/E can mean two very different things. It can mean the market is cheap — prices have fallen while earnings held up — or it can mean the market expects earnings to fall, so today's profits are worth less than they look. The ratio alone cannot tell you which.

That's why the AMR is careful to note that these valuation and breadth levels have not reliably told it what the market does next. History shows low valuations have often preceded better long-term returns, but with a wide and unpredictable range of outcomes over any one month.

  • A low P/E describes how the market is priced today; it is not a signal about next week.
  • Compare valuations with the index's own history and with other segments — today, large caps look cheap while small caps do not.
  • For long-term investors in mutual funds, valuations are better used to calibrate expectations than to time entry and exit.

Macro

  • The RBI's policy decision on Wednesday, October 7 — repo rate is 5.25%; eight of ten economists in a Business Standard poll expect a 25bps hike to 5.50%, which would be the first increase since February 2023
  • The Cash Reserve Ratio decision (currently 3%) and M3 money-supply data on the same day
  • Crude oil after today's MCX drop, and the rupee near ~96.30 per dollar
  • Whether the euro's 17-month low and the strong dollar spread to emerging-market currencies

Mutual funds

  • A possible rate hike's effect on debt funds: rising rates generally pressure existing bond prices, even as new holdings may eventually earn higher yields
  • Whether DII buying (₹5,182 crore today, down from ₹10,000+ crore a day last week) holds up against foreign selling
  • The valuation split — large caps at the cheap end of their five-year range, small caps at the expensive end — as a reminder to check how a fund's allocation matches your risk profile
  • TCS results on Thursday as the first read on IT's September-quarter earnings
