Nifty rebounds 1.30% to 22,520 as IT leads a broad rally and the week ends in the green
A day after closing at a 52-week low, Nifty rose 1.30% to 22,520.45 and Sensex 1.23% to 72,472.33, never trading below Thursday's close. IT surged 3.0% after TCS's results, 14 of 15 sectors rose, and crude fell below $91 on signs of US-Iran diplomatic engagement. Breadth improved to 1,328 advancers against 971 decliners, though activity was subdued; the Fear & Greed Index rose from 9 to 14, still extreme fear, and the put-call ratio jumped from 0.73 to 1.14. Nifty ended the week up 0.4%. Foreign investors sold for a tenth straight session (₹12,943 crore per the AMR's NSDL chart, against ₹4,743 crore of DII buying), and Thursday's foreign figure has been revised down from the provisional ₹12,944 crore to ₹6,206 crore. Jio Platforms is reported to be planning a ₹30,200 crore IPO opening October 21, Poonawalla Fincorp's profit rose fivefold, and the US suspended eight tech firms including Infosys, Wipro and Tata from a green-card labour certification programme. India CPI on October 12 is the next key release.
Day in Brief
A day after closing at a 52-week low, Nifty gapped up, never traded below Thursday's close, and finished at 22,520.45, up 1.30%. IT led after TCS's results, 14 of 15 sectors rose, and the index ended the week up 0.4% — though sentiment gauges are still deep in fear and foreign investors kept selling.
Key insights
Nifty rose 288.65 points (+1.30%) to 22,520.45 and Sensex gained 879.09 points (+1.23%) to 72,472.33, opening 83 points higher at 22,315 and closing about 205 points above the open.
- Per the Zerodha After Market Report, the index climbed above 22,500 by 11:15 AM, dipped to 22,450 on profit booking around noon, then rose to an intraday high near 22,580 around 2:15 PM before easing in the final hour.
- Friday's close recovers about 78% of Thursday's 371-point fall and leaves Nifty up 0.4% over five sessions, though still down 3.9% over 20.
IT surged 3.0% to lead the market after TCS's results, and the rally was broad: 14 of 15 sectors advanced, with FMCG up 2.2% and PSU Banks 1.6%. Only Oil & Gas slipped, by 0.1%.
- Easing global tensions helped arrest the recent rise in oil prices, per the AMR — crude fell below $91 a barrel after gaining 3.6% in the previous session, on signs of renewed US-Iran diplomatic engagement.
- Midcap 150 led the broad indices at +1.4%, with Nifty 50 up 1.3%; Smallcap 250 (+0.5%) and Microcap 250 (+0.3%) lagged.
Breadth improved but conviction was thin: 1,328 stocks rose against 971 that fell, yet the AMR notes trading activity stayed subdued and only 17.4% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average.
- The After Market Fear & Greed Index improved from 9 to 14 — still extreme fear — with weak trends, defensives outperforming high-beta stocks and elevated volatility weighing on the reading.
- New 52-week lows still outnumbered highs 13 to 2, and no sector is above all four key moving averages.
Options positioning swung sharply toward support: the Nifty put-call ratio jumped from 0.73 to 1.14 as put writing strengthened, and implied volatility fell from 13.5% to 10.8%.
- Seven of the twelve largest stock-futures open-interest moves were long buildups — the reverse of Thursday, when seven were short buildups.
- FIIs still hold just 9.6% of their index-futures positions long, against 82% for retail and HNI traders.
Foreign investors kept selling through the rally: the AMR's NSDL-based chart shows a net ₹12,943 crore sold on Friday against ₹4,743 crore of domestic buying — a tenth straight session of net foreign selling.
- A correction to yesterday's edition: Thursday's foreign figure, which we reported as a provisional ₹12,944 crore, has been revised in the NSDL data to ₹6,206 crore.
- Friday's ₹12,943 crore is almost identical to Thursday's superseded provisional number, which may indicate a reporting-date shift in the source data, so the day-by-day split deserves caution. The direction is not in doubt: every session since September 25 shows net foreign selling.

Source: Zerodha After Market Report, October 9, 2026. Media, IT and Private Banks are the relative leaders over both 20 and 60 sessions, though no sector is above all four key moving averages.
IT services: TCS, Persistent, Hexaware, Cyient
IT led the market after TCS's results on Thursday. Persistent Systems rose 5.5% to ₹5,770, Cyient 6.8% to ₹1,159, and Hexaware Technologies 5.3% to ₹538.50 on 112 times its usual volume.
Why it matters: Separately, the US suspended eight technology companies, including Infosys, Wipro and Tata, from a federal labour certification programme used for employment-based green cards. TCS said its applications under the programme were in single digits over the last two years and it does not expect an impact on its workforce strategy.
Jio Platforms (unlisted)
Per Bloomberg reports cited in the AMR, Jio Platforms plans to price its IPO at ₹1,065-₹1,119 a share, targeting a valuation of up to ₹10.3 lakh crore ($107 billion) and raising around ₹30,200 crore, with subscription expected to open on October 21 and listing on October 28.
Why it matters: If it proceeds on those terms it could be India's largest-ever public offering. These are reported plans, not a confirmed filing; details can change.
Poonawalla Fincorp
Q2 FY27 net profit rose more than fivefold year-on-year to ₹375 crore, with total income up 70% to ₹2,625 crore. Assets under management stood at ₹74,008 crore and net interest margin improved 16 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 9.26%.
Why it matters: A strong print in the lending space on a day when Nifty Financial Services rose 1.3%.
Anand Rathi Wealth
The weakest F&O stock, falling to ₹2,039 on 3.0x its usual volume; its quarterly results were scheduled for the same day.
Why it matters: The AMR's own research notes falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the market over the following week.
Colgate-Palmolive and Apollo Hospitals
Colgate rose to ₹1,818 on 8.6x usual volume as Nifty FMCG gained 2.2%; Apollo Hospitals rose to ₹8,028 on 3.1x volume and was among the Nifty 50's top gainers.
Why it matters: Defensive names joined the rally rather than lagging it, consistent with the AMR's note that defensives are still outperforming high-beta stocks.
Adani Ports and KEC International
Adani Ports recorded a major delivery spike — 84% of traded shares went to delivery against its usual 52%. KEC International rose 5.8% to ₹369.85 on 16.3x its usual volume.
Why it matters: A jump in delivery share means more buyers kept their shares rather than trading out the same day; the AMR calls this a first screen, not a verdict.

Why Markets Moved
IT earnings and cooler oil turned the mood. Nifty opened with an 83-point gap up at 22,315, led by IT stocks after TCS posted what the AMR calls a decent earnings report, while easing global tensions helped arrest the recent rise in oil prices. The index built on early gains, climbing above 22,400 within the first half hour and 22,450 by 10 AM, then above 22,500 and briefly toward 22,525 around 11:15 AM. Profit booking dragged it back toward 22,450 by noon. The second half brought a gradual recovery: Nifty reclaimed 22,500 around 1 PM, buying strengthened after 1:30 PM, and the index reached an intraday high near 22,580 around 2:15 PM. Momentum faded in the final hour and Nifty closed at 22,520.45, about 205 points above its open — a strong recovery session that ended the week on a positive note. Cooling bond yields also supported the rebound, per Business Standard.

India outperformed a mixed global tape: Only three of eight tracked overseas markets rose in their latest session — Hang Seng (+1.8%), Shanghai (+0.3%) and the Dow (+0.1%) — while the Nasdaq 100 fell 1.3% and the DAX 0.9%. Friday's gain was led by domestic factors: IT earnings and lower oil.
The bounce was strongest in large and mid caps: Nifty 50 (+1.3%) and Midcap 150 (+1.4%) led; Smallcap 250 rose 0.5% and Microcap 250 0.3%. Over 20 sessions, Next 50 (-6.4%) and Midcap 150 (-6.0%) remain the hardest hit, against -3.9% for the Nifty 50.
Valuations are still at the low end for large caps: Nifty 50 trades at 19.3x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 17.9x, each lower than on 99% of days since April 2021. Smallcap 250 sits at 34.0x, higher than on 89% of days.
Commodities: metals up, crude flat: MCX silver rose 2.2% and gold 1.2% (₹1,51,380) by 19:22 IST, with copper up 1.5% and zinc 1.9%. Crude was nearly flat at -0.2% (₹8,844) and is down 5.4% over 20 sessions; natural gas rose 1.4% and is up 7.8% over five sessions.
The technical picture is unchanged: Options imply a 22,358-22,767 range into the October 13 expiry, with the heaviest put open interest at 21,500 and call open interest at 23,000. The 20-day moving average, now at 22,973, remains the first major trend hurdle.

Global Brief
Crude back below $91: Oil fell after gaining 3.6% in the previous session, as signs of renewed US-Iran diplomatic engagement eased supply concerns. Expectations that China will resume refined fuel exports also weighed on prices.
UNCTAD sees slower global growth: The UN trade body projected global growth slowing to 2.6% in 2026 from 2.9% in 2025, citing the energy shock from the Middle East conflict. Global trade is expected to grow 4% in real terms after a record $35 trillion in 2025.
Telecom stocks hit by a SpaceX spectrum deal: US and European telecom stocks fell sharply after SpaceX reportedly agreed to acquire an $8 billion spectrum portfolio, raising concerns about competition from satellite-based mobile services. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T dropped 5.5-7.4% in premarket trading.
PepsiCo taps Europe's bond market: It raised €1 billion ($1.12 billion) through three-year and nine-year bonds, a day after lowering its earnings growth outlook on rising costs and weakness in North America.
Tesla's China sales rise: China-made EV sales rose 5% year-on-year to 95,366 units in September, up from 3.6% growth in August — an 11th consecutive month of annual growth.
India Brief
Coal supply to power plants is stabilising: Daily coal supplies rose around 36% from September lows, and the daily stock depletion rate more than halved from 0.243 million tonnes in September to 0.116 million tonnes in October. The Coal Ministry said the situation is stabilising, although stock rebuilding has yet to begin.
Airtel Money lists in London: Airtel Money debuted on the London Stock Exchange in the exchange's largest IPO in five years, with shares rising as much as 2.1% above the £1.96 offer price. The offering raised around £529 million, valuing the company at about £5.3 billion.
US tightens scrutiny of green-card sponsorship: The US suspended eight major technology companies, including Infosys, Wipro and Tata, from a federal labour certification programme used for employment-based green cards. TCS said its workforce strategy in the US is anchored in hiring local talent across 31 offices and delivery centres.

Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 9, 2026. October 8's foreign figure is the revised NSDL number, not the provisional one in yesterday's edition.
Ten straight sessions of foreign selling: Every session from September 25 to October 9 shows net foreign selling in the AMR's chart, totalling roughly ₹69,600 crore over the ten sessions.
A revision, and a caution: Thursday's foreign figure has been revised from the provisional ₹12,944 crore to ₹6,206 crore as NSDL data replaced the NSE provisional number. Friday's ₹12,943 crore is nearly identical to that superseded figure, so it may reflect a reporting-date shift rather than a second heavy day; we report it as the source shows it and will update if it is revised.
Domestic buying continued: DIIs bought ₹4,743 crore on Friday, after ₹10,703 crore on Thursday. Over the same ten sessions they bought roughly ₹66,600 crore, absorbing most of the foreign selling.

Concept of the Day
What is an IPO price band, and what does a valuation figure mean?
Reports this week suggest Jio Platforms plans to price its IPO at ₹1,065-₹1,119 a share. That range is the price band: the lowest and highest price at which investors can bid during the subscription window. The final issue price is set within the band once bidding closes, and if an issue is heavily subscribed it is usually set at the top.
The valuation figure — reported here as up to ₹10.3 lakh crore — is simply the issue price multiplied by the total number of shares the company will have after the offer. It tells you what the market is being asked to pay for the whole business, which you can compare with its profits and with listed peers. It is a price, not a measure of whether the price is fair.
The amount raised (about ₹30,200 crore in the reports) is a different number again: it is only the value of the shares being sold in the offer, which is usually a small slice of the company. Whether that money goes to the company (a fresh issue) or to existing shareholders selling their stake (an offer for sale) is one of the first things worth checking in the prospectus.
- The price band is the range you can bid in; the final price is set within it after bidding.
- Valuation is price times total shares — a price tag for the whole company, not a verdict on its worth.
- Check how much of the money raised goes to the company versus existing shareholders.
