Nifty falls 1.64% to a fresh 52-week low as every sector sinks and Fear & Greed drops to 9

Nifty fell 1.64% to 22,231.80 and Sensex 1.44% to 71,593.24 — a fresh 52-week low per the Zerodha After Market Report — after opening flat at the day's high and sliding all session. All 15 sectors fell (Metal -3.5%, IT only -0.1%), 2,068 stocks fell against 248 that rose, and new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 68 to 1. The After Market Fear & Greed Index plunged from 17 to 9, deep in extreme fear. Foreign investors sold a net ₹12,944 crore (provisional) — a ninth straight session of selling and the largest of the last ten — against ₹10,703 crore of DII buying. MCX crude rose 4.6% on fears of Middle East supply disruption, and every tracked overseas market fell. TCS reported Q2 net profit up 14.9% to ₹13,884 crore with AI revenue crossing 10% of the total, Reliance fell 2.6% on Starlink-related comments, and the Nifty 50's trailing P/E of 19.0x is cheaper than on 100% of days since April 2021. India CPI inflation on October 12 is the next key release.

Day in Brief

A broad, one-way selloff: every sector fell and sentiment hit its lowest reading yet

Nifty opened flat at 22,599 — which turned out to be the day's high — and slid almost all session to close at 22,231.80, down 1.64%, a fresh 52-week low per the Zerodha After Market Report. All 15 sectors ended lower, 2,068 stocks fell against just 248 that rose, and the After Market Fear & Greed Index plunged from 17 to 9.

Key insights

  • Nifty fell 371.25 points (-1.64%) to 22,231.80 and Sensex dropped 1,045.46 points (-1.44%) to 71,593.24, never trading above Wednesday's close and finishing about 370 points below the open.

    • Per the AMR, weak global cues, surging oil prices on supply-shortage concerns and fragile domestic sentiment drove the opening slide below 22,550, and the index fell below 22,400 by 11:15 AM, 22,300 by 12:30 PM and 22,250 by 1:30 PM before touching a low of 22,180 around 3 PM.
    • Nifty is now down 1.7% over five sessions and 5.9% over 20 — the gains of earlier this week have been fully erased.
  • Selling was as broad as it gets: 2,068 decliners against 248 advancers, all 15 sectors lower, and new 52-week lows outnumbering highs 68 to 1 among Nifty 500 stocks.

    • IT held up best at -0.1% (27,737) while Metal fell 3.5% (11,870), Realty 3.2%, Media 2.8%, and Auto and Oil & Gas 2.5% each.
    • Only 14.6% of Nifty 500 stocks remain above their 50-day average, down from 23.3% yesterday; no sector is now above all four key moving averages.
  • The After Market Fear & Greed Index plunged from 17 to 9 — deep into extreme fear — with the AMR citing weak trends, bonds outperforming equities and defensive stocks outperforming high-beta ones.

    • The largest companies fell least: Nifty 50 -1.6% against Next 50 -2.6%, Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 both -2.4%, and Microcap 250 -2.8%.
    • Nifty's trailing P/E is now 19.0x, lower than on 100% of days since April 2021 against a five-year median of 22.1x; the Next 50 trades at 17.7x, also the cheapest in that window.
  • Foreign investors sold a net ₹12,944 crore (NSE provisional figure) — the largest daily outflow of the last ten sessions and a ninth straight session of net selling — while domestic institutions bought ₹10,703 crore.

    • It was the first session in three where foreign selling outweighed domestic buying; DII purchases roughly doubled from Wednesday's ₹4,597 crore.
    • FIIs hold just 8.5% of index-futures positions long against retail and HNI traders' 84%; the put-call ratio fell from 0.89 to 0.73 as call writing intensified, and implied volatility rose from 11.9% to 13.5%.
  • Crude oil was the common thread: MCX crude rose 4.6% and the AMR reports prices above $92.6 a barrel, their highest in nearly a month, on fears of Middle East supply disruption after reports of potential US military action against Iran.

    • Oil marketing companies, airlines and other crude-sensitive businesses fell as much as 5% on concerns about higher operating costs and margin pressure.
    • Every tracked overseas market also fell in its latest session, led by the Hang Seng (-1.6%), DAX (-1.2%) and Nikkei (-1.1%).

Source: Zerodha After Market Report, October 8, 2026. Media, Private Banks and Pharma remain the relative leaders over 20 and 60 sessions, but no sector is now above all four key moving averages.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

IT

Reported Q2 FY27 net profit up 14.9% year-on-year to ₹13,884 crore on revenue up 11.2% to ₹73,188 crore. Annualised AI revenue reached $3.1 billion, crossing 10% of total revenue, while deal wins were $9 billion, down from $9.5 billion in Q1.

Why it matters: An early IT result of the quarter. Nifty IT closed at 27,737, down just 0.1% and the day's best-performing sector, while the rest of the market fell sharply.

Reliance Industries

-2.6%
Conglomerate

Fell about 2.6%, erasing nearly $5 billion in market value, after Elon Musk's comments about alleged opposition to Starlink unsettled telecom investors. The decline contributed roughly 53 points to Nifty's fall.

Why it matters: As the index's largest weight, a single heavy stock can account for a visible slice of the day's move.

Adani Green Energy

-7.9%
Power

The weakest F&O stock, falling to ₹1,236 on 4.1x its usual volume. Adani Enterprises fell 5.4% to ₹2,596 and Inox Wind 7.0%.

Why it matters: The AMR's own research notes falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the market over the following week.

Jubilant Foodworks

-7.2%
Consumer

Dropped to ₹427.60 on 3.6x its usual volume, among the heaviest-volume declines. Tube Investments fell 6.2% to ₹2,241.

Why it matters: Heavy volume on a fall suggests real selling pressure rather than a thin-market drift.

LIC Housing Finance and PNB Housing Finance

+4.2% / +1.7%
Housing finance

LIC Housing rose to ₹537 on 3.9x its usual volume, the day's top F&O gainer, and PNB Housing to ₹1,150 on 2.1x. ICICI Lombard General rose 2.1%.

Why it matters: A few financials bucked the tape, though Nifty Financial Services still closed 1.1% lower.

Tata Power and Tata Steel

Power and metals

Tata Power hit a fresh 52-week low of ₹338.40 despite announcing a floating-solar pilot with Norway's Ocean Sun. Tata Steel's consolidated Q2 sales fell marginally to 7.96 million tonnes on weaker overseas operations, while India sales rose 8% to 5.97 million tonnes and domestic crude steel production rose 10%.

Why it matters: Nifty Metal fell 3.5% — the day's biggest sectoral loser — even as Tata Steel's domestic numbers grew.

Why Markets Moved

A flat open, then six hours of selling with no real bounce. Nifty opened flat at 22,599 and came under immediate selling pressure, slipping below 22,550 within the opening minutes and drifting toward 22,450 by 10 AM. A brief recovery attempt failed, and the index oscillated between 22,430 and 22,450 through the morning before selling intensified around 11:15 AM and dragged it below 22,400 and toward 22,350 by noon. Weakness persisted: Nifty slipped below 22,300 around 12:30 PM and toward 22,250 by 1:30 PM, then consolidated between 22,200 and 22,250 in the final hour. A fresh bout of selling briefly took it to 22,180 around 3 PM before a modest closing recovery to 22,231.80. The AMR describes persistent selling pressure and rising global risks; oil, a firmer dollar and continuing foreign outflows after Wednesday's rate hike were the common threads.

Global indices, latest completed session — every tracked market fell (Asia to Oct 8; Europe and US to Oct 7)

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:05 IST, October 8, 2026

  • Large caps fell least; the rest of the market fell much harder: Nifty 50 fell 1.6% while Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 each fell 2.4% and Microcap 250 fell 2.8%. Over 20 sessions the damage is deepest in Midcap 150 (-7.7%) and Next 50 (-7.3%), against -5.9% for the Nifty 50.

  • Valuations are now at the cheap end for large caps, still high for small caps: Nifty 50 trades at 19.0x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 17.7x, each lower than on 100% of days since April 2021. Nifty Smallcap 250 sits at 33.9x, higher than on 87% of days, and Midcap 150 at 27.7x.

  • Defensives held up less badly than cyclicals: IT (-0.1%), Private Banks (-0.9%) and Banks (-1.0%) fell least, while Metal (-3.5%), Realty (-3.2%), Media (-2.8%), Auto (-2.5%) and Oil & Gas (-2.5%) fell most. Pharma and Healthcare, both recent relative leaders, fell 2.3%.

  • Commodities: oil and gas up, precious and base metals mostly down: MCX crude rose 4.6% to ₹8,946 and natural gas 1.9% (up 8.8% over five sessions). Gold was nearly flat at +0.2% (₹1,49,430), silver fell 1.0% to ₹2,21,410 — down 9.3% over 20 sessions — and aluminium fell 1.3%.

  • Options show traders bracing for more downside or limited upside: The put-call ratio fell from 0.89 to 0.73 on stronger call writing, and options imply a 21,968-22,527 range into the October 13 expiry, with the heaviest put open interest at 21,000 and call open interest at 23,000. The 20-day moving average at 23,019 remains the first major trend hurdle.

Global Brief

  • Crude at a near one-month high: Oil climbed above $92.6 per barrel, its highest in nearly a month, amid renewed fears of Middle East supply disruption following reports of potential US military action against Iran.

  • TSMC posts record quarterly revenue: Q3 revenue was a record T$1.49 trillion (about $46.7 billion), up 50% year-on-year and ahead of expectations, as demand for AI chips continued to drive growth.

  • Samsung guides to a record profit: Samsung projected Q3 operating profit of 107.4 trillion won ($80.2 billion), per the AMR, up nearly ninefold from a year earlier, driven by booming demand for AI memory chips and above market expectations.

  • Fast Retailing's fifth straight record year: The Uniqlo owner reported a 32% rise in annual operating profit to ¥743 billion, with North America and Europe overtaking China as its largest market.

India Brief

  • GST Council widens input tax credit: It approved changes expanding input tax credit eligibility and allowing refunds of accumulated credit on input services and capital goods. Businesses can now claim ITC on employee health and life insurance, telecom towers, pipelines and certain written-off inventory.

  • Crude-sensitive stocks under pressure: Oil marketing companies, airlines and other crude-sensitive businesses fell as much as 5% as rising oil raised concerns about operating costs and margins.

  • Government to consult on AI regulation: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said a consultation paper on AI regulation focused on safety, deepfakes and a human-first approach would come within a month: "The time has come for AI regulations."

FII/DII Flows

Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign; October 8 is the NSE provisional figure until NSDL reports) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 8, 2026

  • The largest foreign outflow in the ten-session window: FIIs sold a net ₹12,944 crore (provisional), more than their previous worst day in the window, ₹10,743 crore on September 30, and the ninth consecutive session of net foreign selling.

  • DIIs stepped up: Domestic institutions bought ₹10,703 crore — their second-largest daily purchase in the window after ₹11,272 crore on September 30 — but it fell ₹2,241 crore short of foreign selling.

  • Foreign positioning is still stretched: FIIs hold 8.5% of index-futures contracts long and 42% of all open index-futures positions despite making only 18% of the day's trades — a sign they are carrying, not churning, their (mostly bearish) positions.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

What does "extreme fear" mean for a long-term investor?

Today the After Market Fear & Greed Index fell to 9 out of 100 — the lowest reading in this edition's coverage. The index averages eight market readings, such as breadth, volatility, new highs and lows, and the balance of bonds against equities, each compared against its own past year. A very low number means that, by those measures, the market is as worried as it has been in the past twelve months.

Extreme fear feels like a signal to act. But the AMR is explicit that such readings describe the mood and have not reliably predicted the market's next move: fear can persist or deepen, and markets can also recover quickly. What does tend to be true is that decisions made at moments of peak fear are often ones people later regret.

For a SIP investor, a falling market means the same monthly amount buys more units at lower prices, which is the rupee-cost-averaging effect working as designed — though it guarantees neither profit nor protection from further falls. The practical questions are the ones that don't change with the headlines: does this money have a goal more than five years away, and is the portfolio mix still one you can hold through a bad year?

  • A low Fear & Greed reading describes the mood; it is not a buy or sell signal.
  • Decisions at moments of peak fear are the ones most often regretted later.
  • Check your goals and time horizon, not the headlines, before changing a plan.

  • Debt funds after Wednesday's rate hike: longer-duration funds are the most rate-sensitive

Corrections & updates

  • 10 OctThe foreign-investor figure for October 8 was reported here as a provisional net sale of ₹12,944 crore. NSDL data published the next day revised it to ₹6,206 crore, so this was not the largest outflow of the ten-session window, and domestic buying (₹10,703 crore) exceeded foreign selling that day.
