Nifty closes a 2.8% week at 23,146 with a second straight gain as IT jumps 3.9%
Nifty rose 0.65% to 23,146.15 and Sensex 0.56% to 74,729.27, recovering from an early dip below 23,000 to close near the day's high — a second straight gain and a 2.78% rise for the week. IT jumped 3.9% (Tech Mahindra +8.5% to a 52-week high) and eight of 15 sectors rose, but the broader market barely moved: Midcap 150 slipped 0.1% and new 52-week lows outnumbered highs. Fear & Greed eased from 33 to 30. Foreign investors were provisional net buyers of ₹1,166 crore while domestic institutions sold ₹3,661 crore, their first net sale in ten sessions; for the week, foreign selling of ₹4,187 crore was outweighed by ₹7,813 crore of domestic buying. Crude neared $98 after a 6% weekly rise, the 10-year bond yield rose to 7.41% and the rupee firmed to ₹94.99. Federal Bank posted a record profit, PNB's rose 13%, and the monsoon ended about 15% below normal.
Day in Brief
Nifty dipped below Thursday's close in the first half hour, recovered by 10 AM, and finished at 23,146.15 — up 0.65% on the day and 2.78% on the week, its second straight weekly gain. IT did the heavy lifting again, rising 3.9%, while oil rose over the week and most of the broader market barely moved.
Key insights
Nifty rose 148.80 points (+0.65%) to 23,146.15 and Sensex gained 413.66 points (+0.56%) to 74,729.27, after a gap-up open at 23,065, a quick dip to about 22,914 and a recovery that held above 23,000 for the rest of the day.
- Per the Zerodha After Market Report, Nifty reached 23,140 by 10:15 AM, spent the afternoon between about 23,080 and 23,140, and rose in the closing minutes to finish near the day's high of 23,150.
- For the week, Nifty gained 625.70 points (+2.78%) from 22,520.45; over 20 sessions it is down just 0.5%.
IT rose 3.92% to 31,924, leading eight of 15 sectors higher — and the AMR's weekly edition says IT has outperformed the Nifty 500 by 14.5 percentage points over 13 weeks.
- Tech Mahindra rose 8.5% to a fresh 52-week high, with Wipro (+6.0%), KPIT (+5.5%), TCS (+4.9%) and Infosys (+4.6%) close behind.
- IT, Media and Private Banks are now all trading above their four key moving averages; Consumer Durables (-0.6%), Oil & Gas (-0.5%) and FMCG (-0.4%) fell.
Breadth was positive (1,292 stocks up, 1,017 down) but the gains were concentrated: Midcap 150 slipped 0.1%, Smallcap 250 rose just 0.1%, and new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 10 to 5.
- Only 22.1% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average, despite the index's two-week recovery.
- The After Market Fear & Greed Index eased from 33 to 30, still in the fear zone, citing weak underlying trends, elevated volatility and defensive stocks outperforming high-beta ones.
Flows reversed roles on Friday: foreign investors were provisional net buyers of ₹1,166 crore, while domestic institutions sold a net ₹3,661 crore — their first net sale in the ten sessions shown.
- For the week, foreign investors sold ₹4,187 crore and domestic institutions bought ₹7,813 crore; over four weeks, foreign outflows of ₹71,172 crore were more than absorbed by ₹87,979 crore of domestic buying, per the AMR's weekly edition.
- Treat Friday's foreign figure with caution: provisional foreign numbers have been revised materially several times this month.
The macro backdrop stayed mixed: crude traded near $98 a barrel after rising more than 6% on the week on Middle East tensions, and India's 10-year government bond yield rose to 7.41%, near a one-year high — while the rupee firmed to ₹94.99 per dollar.
- India's foreign exchange reserves fell $8.58 billion to $726.03 billion in the week to October 9, nearly $60 billion below the September 4 record of $785.71 billion.
- The southwest monsoon ended about 15% below its long-period average, per IMD data — a factor to watch for food prices and rural demand.

Source: Zerodha After Market Report, October 16, 2026. IT, Media and Private Banks are the relative leaders over 20 and 60 sessions and are now trading above all four key moving averages.
IT services: Tech Mahindra, Wipro, TCS, Infosys
Tech Mahindra rose 8.5% to ₹1,790 on 9.1x its usual volume and hit a fresh 52-week high; Wipro rose 6.0% to ₹184.40, KPIT 5.5%, TCS 4.9% to ₹2,465 and Infosys 4.6% to ₹1,161. These were the day's five biggest F&O gainers.
Why it matters: A broad sector move rather than one company's news. The AMR's research notes that heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going, so a strong day is not a forecast.
Federal Bank
Reported its highest-ever quarterly net profit, ₹1,386 crore in Q2 FY27, up 45.1% year-on-year. Net interest income rose 26.4% to ₹3,153 crore, net interest margin improved to 3.32%, and gross and net NPAs reached decade lows.
Why it matters: Better asset quality and margins at the same time is the combination bank investors look for.
Punjab National Bank
Q2 net profit rose 13% to ₹5,532 crore and total income 5.4% to ₹38,185 crore; gross NPA fell to 2.55% from 3.45% a year ago.
Why it matters: PSU Banks rose 0.7% on the day.
DLF
Q2 consolidated net profit rose 10% to ₹1,301 crore; total income was little changed at ₹2,297 crore against ₹2,262 crore.
Why it matters: Profit grew faster than income; Nifty Realty slipped 0.3%.
Angel One and Yes Bank
Angel One was the weakest F&O stock, falling to ₹300 on 3.4x its usual volume. Yes Bank fell a further 3.4% to ₹17.50 on 3.9x volume, a day after its 14.5% drop on the Supreme Court's AT-1 bond ruling.
Why it matters: The AMR notes falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging the market over the following week.
HBL Engineering, R R Kabel, CCL Products
HBL Engineering jumped to ₹833.15 on 17.5x its usual volume. R R Kabel fell 8.3% and CCL Products 7.1% (on 10x volume). Waaree Energies recorded a sharp delivery spike.
Why it matters: Non-F&O stocks face daily price limits and tend to move more; moves on volume this heavy are usually news-driven.

Why Markets Moved
An early wobble, then IT carried the day. Nifty opened 68 points higher at 23,065, extending Thursday's momentum despite mixed global cues and a spike in oil prices. It came under immediate selling pressure, slipping below 23,000 within minutes and toward 22,920 by 9:40 AM. Buying from the lows took it back above 23,000 around 10 AM and toward 23,140 by 10:15 AM. After easing to about 23,075 by 11:15 AM it recovered to about 23,125 by noon, then traded between 23,100 and 23,140 through the early afternoon. Selling after 2 PM pulled it toward 23,080, but buying returned in the closing minutes and Nifty closed at 23,146.15 — about 80 points above its open, its second straight gain and the end of a strong week despite an uncertain global backdrop.

IT's run is now the market's main engine: The AMR's weekly edition calls it a record-breaking rally: IT has outperformed the Nifty 500 by 14.5 percentage points over 13 weeks, ahead of Media, Telecom and Private Banks. A rally this concentrated lifts the index more than the average stock — which is why breadth was only modestly positive.
The broader market is still in a downtrend: Over 20 sessions, Next 50 is down 3.0%, Midcap 150 3.7% and Smallcap 250 2.1%, against just 0.5% for the Nifty 50. Only 22.1% of Nifty 500 stocks sit above their 50-day average.
Valuations moved up but remain at the cheap end for large caps: Nifty 50 trades at 19.8x trailing earnings (lower than on 96% of days since April 2021) and Next 50 at 18.0x. Smallcap 250, at 33.7x, is still higher than on 85% of days.
Options traders sold calls into the rally: The put-call ratio fell from 1.37 to 1.21 as call writing picked up, and implied volatility fell from 12% to 10.8%. Options implied a 22,922-23,285 range into the October 19 expiry, with the heaviest put open interest at 22,000 and call open interest at 24,000; the 50-day moving average at 23,549 is the next trend hurdle.
Commodities: oil up on the week, precious metals down: By 18:48 IST MCX crude was down 0.5% on the day (₹9,128) but up 3.4% over five sessions; natural gas fell 4.2%. Gold (₹1,47,587) and silver were nearly flat on the day but down 2.6% and 6.5% over five sessions.

Global Brief
Oil near $98 after a 6% weekly rise: Escalating Middle East tensions raised supply concerns; a container ship sank after an Iranian strike in the Strait of Hormuz, although some shipping traffic continued through the waterway.
Indonesia's market crashes 11.6%: Its benchmark index fell 11.57%, the biggest one-day decline since 1998, after MSCI outlined plans to remove the country from its emerging-market indexes; the rupiah briefly weakened to 18,070 per dollar.
Global equity funds draw inflows for a fourth week: Net inflows were $20.01 billion in the week to October 14, helped by easing US Treasury yields and earnings optimism, though investors pulled money from technology funds amid rising debt concerns.
Global EV sales dip: Electric-vehicle sales fell 2% in September, ending six months of growth, as record European sales failed to offset weakness in China and North America after US federal EV tax credits expired.
Fed chair keeps options open: Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh avoided signalling October's decision, saying stronger-than-expected inflation had not changed his broader outlook; traders further reduced expectations of an October rate hike.
India Brief
Monsoon ends 15% short: India received 76.86 cm of rain between June 4 and October 15 against a long-period average of 90.63 cm, per IMD data — a significantly weaker-than-normal southwest monsoon.
Forex reserves keep falling: Reserves fell $8.58 billion to $726.03 billion in the week to October 9, another weekly decline, and are nearly $60 billion below the September 4 record of $785.71 billion.
Reliance responds on Starlink: Reliance Industries pushed back against Elon Musk's criticism over delays in Starlink's India entry, saying Jio's satellite services are also awaiting government approvals and that it has never feared competition.
SEBI on derivatives settlement: SEBI whole-time member K. V. R. Murty said the closing auction session remains in use for price discovery, but derivative contracts will now be settled using prices from the continuous trading session between 3:00 and 3:30 PM, adding that liquidity in the auction session has built up steadily over the past two months.
FII/DII Flows
Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign; October 16 is the NSE provisional figure until NSDL reports) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 16, 2026
A one-day role reversal: Foreign investors bought a provisional ₹1,166 crore while domestic institutions sold ₹3,661 crore — the first net domestic sale in the ten sessions shown. One day is not a trend, and the foreign figure may be revised when NSDL reports.
The week and the month: Over the week, foreign investors sold ₹4,187 crore and domestic institutions bought ₹7,813 crore. Over four weeks, foreign outflows of ₹71,172 crore were more than absorbed by ₹87,979 crore of domestic buying, which the AMR describes as continued dependence on domestic institutional support.
Foreign derivatives positioning keeps improving from a low base: FIIs bought a net 6,828 index-futures contracts and raised the share of their positions held long to 11.3% — up from 9.6% a week earlier, but still very low against retail and HNI traders' 83%.

Concept of the Day
Why bond yields matter for share prices: the equity risk premium
A P/E ratio can be turned upside down into an earnings yield. At 19.77 times trailing earnings, the Nifty 50 earns about 1 ÷ 19.77 = 5.06% of its price in a year. A 10-year government bond, meanwhile, yields 7.41%. The gap — 5.06% minus 7.41%, or about −2.35% — is one simple version of the equity risk premium, and it is the figure the AMR's weekly edition reports.
In India this gap is usually negative: its five-year median, per the AMR, is −2.43%. Investors accept a lower starting yield from shares because company earnings are expected to grow, while a bond's interest is fixed. So today's −2.35% is close to normal, even though the Nifty's P/E is near its five-year low.
This is why rising bond yields can hold share prices back. When the safe alternative pays more, investors need shares to be cheaper to make up the difference. It is also why low valuations alone do not mean the market is a bargain — the comparison with bonds matters too.
- Earnings yield = 1 ÷ P/E; compare it with the 10-year bond yield.
- In India the gap is normally negative, because earnings are expected to grow.
- Rising bond yields make the same P/E look less attractive.

Corrections & updates
- 19 OctThis edition reported foreign investors as provisional net buyers of ₹1,166 crore on October 16. NSDL data published the next session show a net sale of ₹4,158 crore, so both foreign investors and domestic institutions were net sellers that day — not a role reversal. With the revision, foreign investors sold about ₹9,511 crore over the week, not the ₹4,187 crore quoted from the AMR's weekly edition.
