Nifty falls 1.1% to 22,889 as private banks slide after results; only PSU banks rise

Nifty fell 1.11% to 22,888.95 and Sensex 1.17% to 73,852.90, giving back about half of Thursday's and Friday's gains after the weekend's bank results. Private banks fell 1.9% — Axis Bank -4.2% despite a 38% profit rise, and HDFC Bank -2.3% after a 4.7% profit rise marginally missed estimates — while public-sector banks rose 2.5% as the only sector in the green, led by Union Bank (+5.2%). The selloff was broad: 1,872 stocks fell against 451, new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 30 to 2, and the Fear & Greed Index fell from 30 to 18. Retail traders hold 85% of their index futures long, a one-year extreme. The RBI ran its first variable rate repo since July as surplus liquidity shrank, crude neared $100, and Friday's foreign flow figure was revised from a provisional net purchase to a ₹4,158 crore sale.

Day in Brief

Bank results disappointed the market, and almost everything fell

After the weekend's results from HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank, private banks led a broad decline. Nifty opened flat, slid for most of the day and closed at 22,888.95, down 1.11% — giving back about half of last Thursday's and Friday's gains. Public-sector banks were the only sector to rise, and the Fear & Greed Index fell back into extreme fear.

Key insights

  • Nifty fell 257.20 points (-1.11%) to 22,888.95 and Sensex lost 876.37 points (-1.17%) to 73,852.90, after a flat open at 23,150 and a steady slide to an intraday low near 22,845 around 2:30 PM.

    • Per the Zerodha After Market Report, early pressure came from a spike in oil prices, the Finance Minister's comments on liquidity and the reasons for Indian markets' underperformance, and continued foreign outflows; Nifty slipped below 23,000 by 11:45 AM and below 22,900 around 1:15 PM.
    • The fall erased about half of the 523-point gain from Thursday and Friday; Nifty is still up 2.4% over five sessions but down 2.0% over 20.
  • Private banks fell 1.9%, the worst of 15 sectors, after their weekend results — even though profits rose. Axis Bank fell 4.2% after a 38% profit increase, and HDFC Bank fell 2.3% after profit growth of 4.7% marginally missed estimates.

    • HDFC Bank's treasury gains fell to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore, and Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha announced his resignation effective December 31, 2026. ICICI Bank also fell despite a 20.1% profit rise, with its net interest margin narrowing to 4.18% from 4.30%.
    • Public-sector banks went the other way, rising 2.5% as the only sector in the green: Union Bank of India gained 5.2% after a 30.3% profit rise, and Punjab National Bank 4.8%.
  • The decline was broad: 1,872 stocks fell against 451 that rose, new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 30 to 2, and Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 each fell 1.1% while Microcap 250 fell 1.7%.

    • Only 18.2% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average, down from 22.1% on Friday.
    • Only IT and Media remain above all four key moving averages — Private Banks dropped off that list — and eight sectors are below every one.
  • Sentiment swung back hard: the After Market Fear & Greed Index plunged from 30 to 18, back into extreme fear, while retail traders' bullishness reached an extreme.

    • Retail and HNI traders hold 85% of their index-futures positions long — higher than on 99.6% of days over the past year — against 10.4% for foreign investors, who sold a net 6,931 index-futures contracts worth ₹1,095 crore.
    • The AMR notes these positioning readings describe the mood and, in its testing, did not predict the market's next move.
  • The RBI ran a ₹1 lakh crore seven-day variable rate repo — its first since July 29 — as the banking system's surplus liquidity shrank, while crude oil hovered near $100 a barrel, close to four-week highs.

    • The auction drew bids of ₹1.51 lakh crore; the RBI accepted ₹1 lakh crore at a weighted average rate of 5.52%.
    • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the fundamentals of the economy remained "fine" but that the flight of capital toward AI and the US "is a concern".

HDFC Bank

-2.3%
Banking

Standalone net profit rose 4.7% to ₹19,510 crore, marginally missing estimates as treasury gains fell to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore; provisions rose 2.1% to ₹3,574 crore. Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha announced his resignation, effective December 31, 2026.

Why it matters: Lower treasury gains — profits from trading bonds — held back the headline number, and the result fell short of what analysts expected.

Axis Bank

-4.2%
Banking

The weakest F&O stock, falling to ₹1,236 on 2.1x its usual volume, after net profit rose 38% to ₹7,003 crore, net interest income 12% to ₹15,371 crore, and net interest margin stood at 3.36%.

Why it matters: A stock can fall on rising profit when the details or the outlook disappoint; the AMR's research notes falls of 4% or more on at least twice the usual volume have tended to keep lagging over the following week.

ICICI Bank

Banking

Standalone net profit rose 20.1% to ₹14,843 crore on strong loan growth and lower provisions; net interest income grew 17.7% to ₹25,339 crore, but net interest margin narrowed to 4.18% from 4.30%. The shares fell 1.15% to ₹1,381.

Why it matters: A narrower margin means each rupee lent is earning slightly less — something investors watch closely as interest rates change.

Public-sector banks: Union Bank, PNB, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India

Nifty PSU Bank +2.5%
Banking

Union Bank of India rose 5.2% to ₹180.70 on 4.8x its usual volume after net profit rose 30.3% to ₹5,537 crore and gross NPAs fell to 2.4% from 3.29%. PNB rose 4.8% to ₹121.90 on 5.7x volume, Bank of Baroda 3.4% and Bank of India 3.3%; Federal Bank, a private lender with record results last week, gained 3.2%.

Why it matters: Union Bank, PNB and Federal Bank all reported lower bad loans in their latest results. Tijori's equal-weighted Public Bank basket was the best of 80 niche themes at +1.5%.

UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Zinc, HFCL

Results

UltraTech's net profit rose 21.3% to ₹1,494 crore on revenue up 18.8%, with domestic grey-cement volumes up 13.8% and margins slightly lower at 16.6%. Hindustan Zinc's profit jumped 142% to ₹6,412 crore with a record EBITDA of ₹9,285 crore. HFCL hit its 5% upper circuit after profit rose 448% to ₹394 crore.

Why it matters: Strong results outside banking, on a day when the broad market fell.

Urban Co., Himadri Speciality, Deepak Fertilisers

-9.9% / -8.3% / -6.6%
Non-F&O movers

Urban Co. fell to ₹142.48 on 3.8x its usual volume, Himadri Speciality fell 8.3% on 3.0x and Deepak Fertilisers 6.6% on 4.6x. MTAR Technologies recorded a sharp delivery spike.

Why it matters: Heavy-volume falls in smaller stocks were part of a broad selloff in which new 52-week lows far outnumbered highs.

Why Markets Moved

A flat open, then a steady slide. Nifty opened flat at 23,150 but came under pressure within minutes, tracking a spike in oil prices, the Finance Minister's comments on excess liquidity and the reasons behind Indian market underperformance, and persistent foreign outflows. After a volatile first half hour — down toward 22,980, then back to 23,150 — selling took it below 23,050 by 10 AM. Rebounds toward 23,100 around 10:30 AM and 23,075 around 11 AM faded, and Nifty slipped below 23,000 by 11:45 AM, below 22,950 shortly after noon and below 22,900 around 1:15 PM, reaching an intraday low near 22,850 by 2:30 PM. It held between 22,850 and 22,890 through the final hour and closed at 22,888.95, about 260 points below its open.

Global indices — Asian closes (Hang Seng to Oct 16); Europe and US mid-session at 19:23 IST

Source: Zerodha After Market Report (global reference indices via Kite Connect), snapshot 19:23 IST, October 19, 2026. European and US figures were still moving when captured.

  • Why the banks mattered so much: HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank are among the largest companies in the Nifty, so their falls pulled the index down more than smaller stocks could. Private Banks fell 1.9% and Financial Services 1.6%, while PSU Banks rose 2.5% on their own results — a sharp split inside the same industry.

  • Smaller companies fell further: Midcap 150 and Smallcap 250 fell 1.1% and Microcap 250 1.7%. Over 20 sessions, Midcap 150 is down 6.1% and Smallcap 250 4.7%, against 2.0% for the Nifty 50.

  • Valuations eased back toward their lows: Nifty 50 trades at 19.3x trailing earnings and Next 50 at 17.9x — each lower than on 99% of days since April 2021. Smallcap 250, at 33.3x, is still higher than on 83% of days.

  • Where the options market is positioned: For the October 27 expiry, the largest put positions sit at 22,500 (about 2% below the close) and the largest call positions at 24,000. The AMR notes that since 2024 the Nifty has stayed between its largest put and call positions less often than inside a band of the same width around the price — open interest shows positioning, not a forecast.

  • Commodities: By 19:23 IST MCX crude was down 1.1% (₹9,292) but up 4.0% over five sessions; gold fell 0.4% (₹1,47,365) and silver 0.5%. Silver is down 13.1% over 20 sessions.

Global Brief

  • Oil near $100: Crude hovered near $100 a barrel, close to four-week highs, after a sharp rise last week, as renewed fighting in the Middle East, attacks on oil infrastructure and tanker disruptions raised fresh supply concerns.

  • France's protests weigh on Europe: Escalating protests raised concerns about political stability and the fiscal outlook: the CAC 40 fell as much as 1.35% and the Stoxx 600 0.82%, French bond yields reached multi-decade highs and the euro weakened.

  • Japan's bond yields ease: The 10-year yield fell to about 2.9%, near five-week lows, after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pledged fiscal discipline and responsible debt issuance.

  • China tightens tech export controls: China proposed export restrictions on 12 solar manufacturing technologies, citing national security, as part of broader revisions covering AI, biotechnology and other sensitive technologies.

  • Cheaper, faster AI from China: MiniMax launched an upgraded M3.1 Flash model, claiming inference speeds have nearly tripled while usage costs fell 70%.

India Brief

  • RBI adds liquidity: The RBI conducted a seven-day variable rate repo auction worth ₹1 lakh crore, its first since July 29, as surplus liquidity in the banking system declined significantly. Bids totalled ₹1.51 lakh crore, and the RBI accepted ₹1 lakh crore at a weighted average rate of 5.52%.

  • The Finance Minister on market underperformance: Nirmala Sitharaman said that "because of the ease of liquidity and ease of availability, people are even exiting easily", that the economy's fundamentals remained "fine", and that "the flight of capital toward AI and the US … is a concern".

  • Strong demand for Jio Platforms' anchor book: Jio Platforms' ₹8,110 crore anchor book reportedly attracted institutional demand worth ₹2.5 lakh crore, over 30 times the amount on offer, with BlackRock, Fidelity and Capital Group among participants ahead of its stock market debut.

FII/DII Flows

Net buying (+) or selling (−) of Indian shares by foreign and domestic institutions, last ten sessions (₹ crore)

Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 19, 2026. October 16's foreign figure is the revised NSDL number.

  • Friday's flows were revised: Friday's foreign figure, reported in that edition as a provisional net purchase of ₹1,166 crore, is now a net sale of ₹4,158 crore — so both foreign investors and domestic institutions sold that day. A correction has been added to the October 16 edition. Provisional foreign figures were revised in five of the seven sessions from October 8 to 16, several times materially — which is why this edition doesn't lead with today's.

  • Today: Foreign investors bought a net ₹2,629 crore and domestic institutions ₹3,201 crore. The latest day's foreign figure may still be revised.

  • Derivatives told a different story: In derivatives, foreign investors were net sellers across the board on notional value: ₹27,609 crore of index options, ₹2,229 crore of stock futures, ₹2,116 crore of stock options and ₹1,095 crore of index futures. The AMR notes options look far larger on this measure, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day

Concept of the day

Why a share can fall when profits rise

Axis Bank reported a 38% rise in quarterly profit and its shares fell 4.2%. HDFC Bank's profit rose 4.7% and its shares fell too. That looks contradictory until you remember that a share price already reflects what investors expected. A result moves the price only by how much it differs from that expectation.

Investors also look past the headline number. How much came from one-off items, like the treasury gains that fell sharply at HDFC Bank and held back its headline growth? Is the margin on each rupee lent rising or shrinking, as it narrowed at ICICI Bank? What do management's comments suggest about the next few quarters? A strong headline with weaker details can disappoint.

It works the other way too: Union Bank rose 5.2% on the same day after reporting a 30.3% profit rise and fewer bad loans. For fund investors, this is a reminder that one day's reaction to results says little about whether a business is good over the long run.

  • Prices move on results compared with expectations, not on whether profit went up.
  • The quality of profit — core business versus one-offs, margins, bad loans — often matters more than the headline.
  • A single day's reaction is noise for a long-term investor; the trend across several quarters is the signal.
