RBI hikes the repo rate to 5.50% and turns hawkish; Nifty gives back its rally to close at 22,603
The RBI raised the repo rate by 25bps to 5.50% — its first hike in nearly four years — and moved its stance from neutral to "calibrated tightening", with Governor Sanjay Malhotra saying the inflation outlook is no longer benign and that the next move can only be a hike or a pause. The RBI also raised its FY27 GDP forecast to 7.1%. Nifty rallied after the 10 AM announcement but the recovery faded, closing at 22,603.05 (-0.76%) with Sensex at 72,638.70 (-0.59%). Only three of fifteen sectors rose: PSU Banks led at +1.0% while Metal fell 2.3%. Breadth turned negative again (1,349 decliners to 957 advancers), the rupee fell to ₹96.78 near its record low, and foreign investors sold an eighth straight session, though at ₹2,490 crore it was the smallest sale of the run. The put-call ratio fell from 1.24 to 0.89, and Fear & Greed slipped to 17, in extreme fear. India's CPI inflation on October 12 is the next key release.
Day in Brief
The RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its stance to "calibrated tightening" — its first hike in nearly four years. Nifty rallied after the 10 AM announcement but the recovery faded, and the index closed at 22,603.05, down 0.76% and below Tuesday's close throughout the session.
Key insights
The RBI Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25bps to 5.50% and moved its stance from neutral to "calibrated tightening", citing renewed West Asia tensions and volatile crude prices while saying domestic growth momentum remains resilient.
- Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the inflation outlook is "no longer benign" and that future action can only be a hike or a pause, depending on how growth and inflation evolve — a rate cut is effectively off the table for now.
- The RBI raised its FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.1%, 40bps above its previous projection, after the economy grew 7.8% in April-June. Consumer inflation was 4.82% in August, above the RBI's 4% target for a third straight month.
Nifty fell 173.05 points (-0.76%) to 22,603.05 and Sensex lost 429.11 points (-0.59%) to 72,638.70 after opening 86 points lower, rallying to a high of 22,718 following the announcement, and then fading to a low of 22,546.
- Per the Zerodha After Market Report, buying pushed Nifty above 22,700 after the policy, but selling returned after 12:30 PM and the post-policy recovery was completely erased by the close — about 110 points below the day's high.
- The index remains 5.0% lower over 20 sessions and 0.5% lower over five; two days of gains have now been followed by a one-day reversal of most of them.
Breadth turned weak again: 1,349 stocks fell against 957 rising (net -392), only three of 15 sectors advanced, and new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 32 to 9 among Nifty 500 stocks.
- PSU Banks led at +1.0% and Media gained 0.7%, while Metal fell 2.3%, Realty 1.8%, Auto 1.6% and IT 1.3%.
- Just 23.3% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 50-day average, unchanged from Tuesday — the recovery in participation stalled.
The rupee fell 35 paise to ₹96.78 per dollar, near its record low of ₹96.98, as the dollar index rose above 102.4 — its highest since March 2025 — and oil rebounded on renewed tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Governor Malhotra said that despite the recent depreciation, several measures including the real effective exchange rate suggest the rupee may be undervalued, and that short-term moves may not reflect underlying value.
- Foreign investors sold ₹2,490 crore of Indian shares — an eighth straight session of net selling, though the smallest daily figure of the streak — while domestic institutions bought ₹4,597 crore.
Positioning sent mixed signals: the Nifty put-call ratio fell sharply from 1.24 to 0.89 as call writers became more active, and nine of the twelve largest stock-futures open-interest moves were short buildups.
- FIIs hold just 9.2% of their index-futures positions long, while retail and HNI traders are 84% long, near their most bullish level of the past year.
- Foreign investors sold a net ₹6,136 crore of index options (notional), ₹1,978 crore of stock futures, ₹1,359 crore of stock options and ₹600 crore of index futures.

Chennai Petroleum
Surged to ₹1,612 on 11.4x its usual volume, the biggest mover among the day's non-F&O stocks. The Tijori Oil Refiners basket was the best of 80 niche themes at +1.8%.
Why it matters: A double-digit jump on heavy volume points to a stock-specific catalyst; the AMR's own research notes heavy-volume rises have not tended to keep going.
Bharti Hexacom and PVR Inox
Bharti Hexacom rose to ₹1,478 on 14.4x its usual volume, and PVR Inox to ₹1,344 on 7.2x, both among the day's top non-F&O gainers.
Why it matters: Both stocks moved on volumes far above normal, which points to news-driven or institutional buying rather than routine trading.
National Aluminium (NALCO)
The weakest F&O stock, closing at ₹321.30 on 1.9x usual volume, as Nifty Metal fell 2.3% to 12,307.
Why it matters: Metals were the day's biggest sectoral loser, with aluminium and silver prices slipping on MCX.
Titan
Fell to ₹4,377 on 4.8x usual volume, one of the heaviest-volume decliners; Adani Enterprises also fell 3.8% and IndusInd Bank 3.4%.
Why it matters: A fall on nearly five times the usual volume suggests real selling pressure, though at 3.8% it is just under the 4% threshold the AMR uses in its research on heavy-volume declines.
Public sector banks
Nifty PSU Bank led the day at 8,089, with Bank of Maharashtra up 4.2% to ₹84.15 and Union Bank of India up 2.8% to ₹173.15 — financial services stocks dominated the F&O gainers list.
Why it matters: PSU banks were the one pocket that held up on a rate-hike day.
L&T, Dixon Technologies and Ola Electric
L&T received initial approval to build the main package of a 1,600 MW thermal power project in Jharkhand (a DVC–Coal India joint venture). Dixon signed a joint venture with Taiwan's Gemtek (60:40) to make optical transceivers and telecom products in India. Ola Electric received in-principle exchange approval for a rights issue of up to ₹1,000 crore.
Why it matters: Each is a stock-specific development rather than a market-wide signal; L&T's notice to proceed follows environmental clearances.

Why Markets Moved
A hawkish surprise on stance, not just on rate. Nifty opened 86 points lower at 22,690 ahead of the 10 AM announcement and slipped toward 22,580 in the opening hour. After the RBI raised the repo rate and changed its stance, buying pushed Nifty above 22,700 and it briefly touched 22,715 around noon. The rebound could not hold: weakness intensified after 12:30 PM, the index fell below 22,600 and touched an intraday low near 22,550 shortly after 2 PM, recovered toward 22,640 by 2:30 PM, and then faded again into a close at 22,603.05. The sequence suggests the market first welcomed clarity — a hike was widely expected — and then reconsidered the wording: a move to "calibrated tightening" and a governor's warning that the next step can only be a hike or a pause leaves little room for easing.

Banks held up; rate-sensitive and cyclical sectors did not: PSU Banks rose 1.0% and Private Banks 0.1%, while Realty (-1.8%), Auto (-1.6%), Consumer Durables (-1.1%) and IT (-1.3%) fell. Higher rates generally lift lending margins for banks but raise borrowing costs for real estate, vehicle and big-ticket purchases. Deputy Governor Swaminathan J said it typically takes about two quarters for hikes to reach end-borrowers' lending rates, and that credit growth should stay strong, with a moderation from 18-20% not a problem for supporting growth.
Valuations are still near the low end for large caps: The Nifty 50's trailing P/E is 19.3x, lower than on 99% of days since April 2021, against a five-year median of 22.1x. Smallcap 250 trades at 34.7x, higher than on 92% of days. Midcap 150 is at 28.4x.
Trading was heavier than usual: Cash turnover reached ₹1.15 lakh crore (4.5% above the 20-session median) and value taken to delivery was ₹47,777 crore (5.8% above) — a busy session, consistent with a big policy event.
Oil rebounded: MCX crude rose 1.2% by 18:52 IST (₹8,736) and natural gas 2.1%, while gold fell 1.0% to ₹1,48,617 and silver 1.6%. Crude recovered toward $90 a barrel from five-week lows after renewed attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz kept supply risks elevated.
A jump in call writing: The put-call ratio fell from 1.24 to 0.89 as call writers grew more active — traders selling upside rather than expecting a rally. The largest open Nifty option positions remain puts at 21,500 and calls at 23,000 for the October 13 expiry.

Global Brief
US long yields at a 24-year high: The 30-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.70%, its highest since 2002, and the 10-year to 5.32%. US stocks opened lower as rising oil and yields pressured equities.
Dollar at its strongest since March 2025: The dollar index rose above 102.4 as higher oil prices reinforced inflation concerns and expectations of tighter-for-longer Fed policy. Investors await the latest FOMC minutes.
US mortgage rates jump: The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose 19 basis points to 7.49%, its highest in nearly three years, adding pressure on housing affordability.
Oil's supply risk remains live: Crude rebounded toward $90 per barrel from five-week lows as renewed tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz offset signs of improving regional supply.
Uber buys ezCater for $2.3 billion: An all-cash deal expanding Uber Eats into corporate and group catering; ezCater generated more than $2.5 billion in gross bookings over the past year.
FII/DII Flows
Source: Zerodha After Market Report — NSDL custody data (foreign) and BSE/NSE (domestic) via India Data Hub, October 7, 2026
Foreign selling is fading in size but not in direction: FIIs sold ₹2,490 crore today, down from ₹9,635 crore on October 5 — an eighth straight net-selling session, but the smallest daily amount in the run.
Domestic institutions keep buying: DIIs bought ₹4,597 crore, so domestic buying exceeded foreign selling for the second consecutive session.
Derivatives show foreigners reducing exposure across the board: Notionally, FIIs were net sellers in all four segments: index options (₹6,136 crore), stock futures (₹1,978 crore), stock options (₹1,359 crore) and index futures (₹600 crore). The AMR notes options look larger on a notional basis, so the sign matters more than the size.

Concept of the Day
What does a repo rate hike mean for your money?
The repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends short-term money to banks. When it rises, it generally becomes more expensive for banks to borrow, and over time they pass that cost on through higher lending rates. Deputy Governor Swaminathan J said this usually takes about two quarters to reach borrowers.
For savers, deposit rates may eventually rise, which can make fixed deposits and new bonds more attractive. For borrowers, floating-rate loans such as many home loans can become more expensive, raising EMIs or lengthening the loan term.
For mutual fund investors, the effect depends on the fund. Existing bonds paying lower interest tend to fall in price when rates rise, so longer-duration debt funds can see short-term losses, while shorter-duration funds are less affected and can reinvest at higher yields. Equity funds feel it indirectly through company borrowing costs and valuations, which is why interest-sensitive sectors such as real estate and autos fell today while banks held up.
- A hike makes borrowing costlier and, over time, saving more rewarding.
- Longer-duration debt funds are more sensitive to rate rises than short-duration ones.
- Match a debt fund's duration to your investment horizon rather than reacting to a single rate decision.
